Small wedding cake plus cupcakes?

Has anyone ever done a wedding cake plus cupcakes? To cut down on cost, we are looking to do a smaller wedding cake plus cupcakes from two different vendors. I haven't given it much thought about how to decorate the cake table so I'm kind of looking for suggestions. I know its "non-traditional" but...

It gives you the opportunity to do a variety of flavors/gluten free which is cool

Small 2 tier cake and then sheet cakes in the back, a variety worked out cheaper for us

We're doing that. Cupcakes and the small cake to cut. Not everyone is a cake fan

    Cupcakes are very rarely cheaper.

In order to host properly, the cupcakes must be the same or equivalent to the small cake that (I assume) you'll be having after you cut it. You can't get yourself a gourmet cake and then get $1 cupcakes for the guests. So in the end, the cupcakes are going to cost just as much as the cake. The way around this is to get a small cake to cut and a sheet cake in the same flavor in the back to serve.

I would do the sheet cake. You should not go to another bakery and get cupcakes, all the cupcakes should be the same quality as the cake you are cutting. - It's much cheaper to just have a small cake for you to cut and then have sheet cakes in the back.

I am doing the same thing. It was significantly cheaper to do the cupcakes/small cake versus the three tiered cake. It was also nice to be able to choose a wide variety of different flavors. I'm doing a cupcake tower.

Where I'm getting our cake, cupcakes are about a dollar each. We're also having a fake cake. It'll be two tiers, the bottom Styrofoam and the top we'll cut. We're having a big wedding so to save on cost, we're going with sheet cakes which are about $0.50 a serving. Sooo much cheaper.

We are doing the same thing! Partially for the cost, and also so we dont have to worry about cake cutting! Its easier for guests to eat a cupcake vs trying to haggle to get the size of a slice of cake they want.

There has been a few bride and grooms on here that have done that. I've also seen a small cutting cake and 2 store bought sheet cakes for eating.

@Besty we are doing the same! We are doing the bundlets that are individually packaged so guests can either eat them or take them home

I think cupcakes would work just fine. We are just doing a small tier cake and sheet cakes. Worked out better for us. But who doesn't love cupcakes

Katie, cupcakes are much harder to eat than a slice of cake when you're all dressed up. As for haggling over the size they want, I've never run into this. Most places cut wedding cake slices the same for everyone.

FH and I have decided on doing this too. It was not so much about budget for us, but because we CANT agree on cake flavors at ALL. Lol. I am SUPER picky with not liking cream cheese, whip cream, chocolate, and he doesn't like fruit or vanilla or lemon..lol. The only cake we really agreed on was almond but then realized (with the help of WW) that some of our guests may have allergies to nuts.

We are glad we came across the cupcake idea because we will have 6 different flavors of cupcakes and still a small cake for our wedding party.
