Small wedding cake plus cupcakes?

Has anyone ever done a wedding cake plus cupcakes? To cut down on cost, we are looking to do a smaller wedding cake plus cupcakes from two different vendors. I haven't given it much thought about how to decorate the cake table so I'm kind of looking for suggestions. I know its "non-traditional" but...

I'm doing cupcakes and a small tiered cake as well. To make the table scape look neat my baker will be using elevated cake plates for the cupcakes.

We're doing cupcakes as well... way cheaper for us 1.25 per cupcake vs $4/serving for cake
