Small wedding, would a DJ be awkward?

Diana, on March 31, 2017 at 12:27 PM Posted in Planning 1 28

Including us we're at 35 people. I planned on a DJ but have heard from others it may be awkward, so now I'm second guessing if we should. It never crossed my mind that it would be weird if only a few people danced or the dance floor was empty for much of the night, I thought it better to have music throughout. Just wondering if others had or attended a small wedding with / without a DJ and how it went.

We are having a DJ for our 40 person wedding. My friends and I all love to dance, and the space is small enough that it shouldn't seem too awkward. I figure that worst case scenario, we have someone to keep the night flowing and FH and I will dance regardless Smiley smile

I've had dj's at my little weddings; it just needs to be the right DJ!

I think it just depends on your crowd and the vibe you want; if you can see your guests dancing the night away and you want a party atmosphere, then keep the DJ! Also: Alcohol. Lots of alcohol.

We had 25 guests at our reception and didn't have a DJ or dancing. We ate, drank, had some delicious cake, chatted for a while, and then we all left. This was also a Sunday evening wedding and we had an older crowd. We wanted to keep it short and sweet, and neither my H or myself are dancers. So it just depends on what y'all would enjoy the most!

I think it depends on your crowd. We're having 50 people and are having a dj

Even if you don't anticipate dancing...a DJ can play jazz or bluesy music in the background just to add to the mood. Plus, a DJ does more than just play music....they make important announcements and just make sure that your reception flows. With smaller receptions, you can get away without having a DJ, but if you want one, get one! I don't think it would be weird at all.

Just when you're interviewing DJs ask them about how well they do with small crowds. I've been to a couple of smaller weddings with DJ's and they've been fantastic!

If a small amount of people want to dance, get a DJ.

I would recommend against having a playlist on an iPod as an alternative. I know some people make it work but I've seen a wedding where the same song played 4x in a row because they just kept it on a loop.

I think it's fine. Not necessary a big-party DJ but a most subtle Dj to play music and facilitate the flow of the reception

If you're only looking to have music playing, why not buy a pa system (such as a fender passport event) which you can stream music through, plus, you can hook mics up to it... they cost about the same as a DJ.... they are easy to set up yourself....

I'm having a wedding with 25 guests and we are not having a DJ. Our family members aren't the dancing type though. We are having musicians play for our ceremony, and then will have some sort of sound system in work during our dinner reception that will play light, casual music from a playlist we create. That is what will work best for us.

I specifically didn't have a DJ but had a well-thought-out playlist that didn't go on shuffle for my 30-person wedding and it worked out fine but I also knew my crowd and I knew that they weren't going to be dancing so I had live musicians for the ceremony so nobody had to worry about fussing with an iPod and I put the iPod on for a cocktail and then shifted the playlist for dinner and it worked out just fine

I am having 40 people, and we opted not to. Don't think there will be many dancers, but we'll have music playing.

As long as the DJ can read the crowd, it should be just fine! Even if no one dances, you'll want some music in the background Smiley smile We had about 65 people at our wedding (bigger than yours, yes, but still not huge) and although not everyone danced, a lot of people did and the DJ was great at reading what would get and keep people on the dance floor.

I'm debating the DJ too. I would be able to get a great deal as my cousin's husband is a DJ, however we are having max 50 people (most likely fewer). The people invited are not much of dancers, I do want to dance with my FH and father, as I want him to dance with his mother. Other than that, we just want a small and intimate setting, probably cocktail type reception.

Our DJ is also our emcee for the ceremony and reception... We don't anticipate over 60 people. The photographer, the officiant, and the DJ are all going to get a timeline of the day and want each other's contact info to go over details amoungst themselves.
