Small wedding, would a DJ be awkward?

Including us we're at 35 people. I planned on a DJ but have heard from others it may be awkward, so now I'm second guessing if we should. It never crossed my mind that it would be weird if only a few people danced or the dance floor was empty for much of the night, I thought it better to have music...

Just wondering if others had or attended a small wedding with / without a DJ and how it went.

55 people. No DJ- we are not the dancing type. But it depends on the crowd

We spent our band and dj money to hire a wonderful pianist, we can dance but he also plays the awesome oldies we all love so the older crowd is happy. we're having about 25 people

I’m planning a 15-20 person wedding and I was debating the same thing. Is it called for with such a small gathering? I’m hoping more people give opinions.

To bring this thread back to life, we’ll have 22 people at our reception (including myself and husband) and we’re getting a DJ! Weddings are what you make them, and for us, we didn’t want to compromise the fun of the “full experience” simply because we are anticipating a smaller crowd. I’ll share updates after the big day Smiley smile

Thank you for this! I needed to hear that. I’m expecting my guest count to be less than 50 now and I was concerned it would be awkward, but having a dance party at the end of the night was one of the things I was most looking forward to. We love to dance and so do our friends!

Same here! We’re going to invite about 50 guests, but not expecting them all to come. My FH and I love to dance, and know that at least several others do too. Im scared it’ll be awkward at times if there’s no one dancing. But there’s been times at other parties where it’s just me and him on the dance floor, so at least us two will be dancing if no one else is!

My friend got married last September and she originally planned on a very large wedding but with COVID had a small family intimate wedding. She still had a DJ, was nice to have some background noise while they got pictures, and people ate.
