So How Much Should Your Wedding DJ Cost?

So I emailed a few DJ companies asking for estimates, because of course none of their websites listed a price, and instead of a quick, general estimate, I get an email that says, "So How Much Shoud Your Wedding DJ Cost?" All it talked about was how I should be looking for the best. Never once was a rough price estimate said, only money mentioned was saying how I should be willing to pay 3x the normal price of a DJ for the best. Yah thanks for the non-information. Seriously and am I suppose to want to giggle with joy and rush to call them back exclaiming how I want the best here is all my money? This isn't the first vendor that has sent me something like this and it's getting really frustrating. I know they sometimes need more information, but usually I can gauge how much they charge if they would just give me their starting price at least (usually I can't even afford the starting price). Sorry for venting, I just wish there was an easier way to do this.

For us the DJ was the most important part so I knew we were going to pay more for them. I found our DJ and he is very well recommended and got back to me within minutes each email I sent. He often texts me to see how everything is going. I researched the hell out of him and can't wait to have him there. Like Celia said in Jersey the prices can be higher. I got lucky he had a promotion because he was voted the Best on Wedding Wire and The Knot. So for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception I only paid 1395. So I say splurge on the DJ because they can make or break the party. Also, I personally wouldn't use Craigslist. And any DJ thay didn't include a price in their response I ignored. Because I was very detailed in my emails.

Our DJ is $1000, but since we had a referral from my brother, we were able to hire him for $850. We contacted him about doing our ceremony music as well, and he told us he would do it for free because he has booked 6 different weddings since my brothers. We have been to a couple different weddings he has done, so we know his quality and were very happy with his pricing.

You should ask around...friends and family. I lucked out and happened to mention in front of my friend that I still needed a DJ. She has a friend that is a DJ and hooked me up. He is doing my wedding for $600 and this includes him starting at 4pm and ending whenever we are finished celebrating. We have our venue into Sunday so we do not have an end time for our reception. Prior to that, my search for a DJ was a nightmare, prices were ridiculous.

Our DJ charged us $500, but that was the basic package (and I got $50 discount because his friends were in our wedding party). But it included music from 6pm-1am, DJ and his helper, fun crazy lights for the dance floor and two uplights for behind the head table.

I just spoke to 2 djs yesterday. To get 8 hours of dj and photo booth both averaged about $1800 including tax. This is in Alberta Canada. They are both very experienced and talked a lot about creating an awesome party atmosphere and being very friendly etc. One company also has back up equipment and djs on call just in case.

My twin sisters wedding is in Nov, so I was gonna see if he does a good job than ask her about him (he is a friend of their family). Besides that I guess I just have to keep emailing different vendors until one of them gives me an actual estimate. Thanks everyone for the advice and information!

I'm near Chicago and we booked a string quartet for all day (4.5 hours) for $1500.00 and that was the lower end of the cost.

1750 for cocktail hour and reception. Picking a DJ was the worst part of planning for me; as a general thing, I hate DJs. I hate when they talk, when they try to treat a wedding like a club, etc. So to get someone who wasn't cheesy, was professional, and who wasn't name dropping constantly during our first calls (no, I really don't care you did a David Tutera wedding), we are paying a premium. Though the average in Santa Barbara is 1500, so 1750 isn't so far off. I second everything Celia said; I know it seems stupid to spend money on this, but do not go for the lowest bidder.

I need to move to wherever you ladies are from! Your prices sound magical. The average quote I was receiving for DJ and some uplighting was $2-3k! I finally found one that DJed my bridesmaid's wedding last year who I liked, and he is charging $1400.

That's been the most frustrating part of my wedding planning!!! My rule has become,if they can't be upfront with their prices then they're not worth my time! I work 9-5 with a 2hr commute my FH works vacation relief, I don't hve time nor the patience to make an appt so that you can tell me I am an idiot for not being able to afford you. When a vendor is good and knows he can't be beat, he has nothing to hide. If they don't tell you a price upfront then theyre trying find out how much they can get out of u. My MC/DJ is $1350 no tax. He's been very quick in responding to my texts, he's given me directions on my multinational wedding and he posted prices online. Also wears proper attire.

Your DJ should be able to give you a price quote based on date and the number of hours you need their services, it's not that difficult. If you are getting the run-around from a vendor, don't book that vendor.

Our DJ was for 4.5 hours ($1,175). We also paid him for 4 uplights ($25/ea) and ceremony sound equipment ($100). We ended up getting a 10% discount on everything because we were referred by a friend of ours who booked him for their wedding. The DJ was a very small portion of our $25,000 budget, like .05%

That would be annoying. I would move on. Send an email back saying I understand what is important. I know what I want in a DJ and all I wanted was an estimate. Thanks but no thanks. Smiley smile

I'm getting married in Philadelphia and our DJ is @$1500 for the ceremony through reception (5 1/2 hrs). This was on the lower end of the DJs we looked at. If you are getting married in a big city, you will definitely be paying much more than you would expect.

My DJ is costing us $900 for 6 hours. She's a friend and traveling from a distance, so that includes her travel expenses and hotel.

When I was searching, I got a variety of quotes all the way up to $2000. This group was the most "dodgy" when trying to get pricing. I would get tons of generic emails from them with info about their services, but really had to press to get any type of pricing, even a price range.
