So many brothers.... i don't know what to do!

Amanda, on August 5, 2021 at 10:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Okay... I am the oldest of 7. I have one sister who will be my maid of honor, and I have 6 younger brothers ranging in age from 24-10. I am close to all of them, but am extremely close to the oldest brother. (I'm technically an only child as my parents divorced when I was 1 and these siblings all come from their second marriage!) However, my brothers and I all share a close bond and I want them all too be involved. My fiancé is very close to my oldest brother as well as we live close to him, they have a ton in common, and that brother has gone out of his way to include him in things since we started dating.

My fiancé wants to ask my oldest brother to be a groomsman, but doesn't want a huge bridal party. (He has four brothers of his own) and I am including my sister, my daughter, sister in law, and best friend.

We want to include my other 4 brothers, but am not sure how to include them all to where they feel honestly included and not like I just gave them a task (ie, greeter, guest book, gifts, etc).

They could be ushers, but I kind of feel like that is more a task rather than being truly involved.

Any ideas?

I agree that usher is more of a job rather than being "in" the wedding. Your youngest brother could be a ring bearer and he's probably old enough to be responsible with the real rings, not decoys. Maybe you could have a talk with all of them and ask which ones actually want to be in the ceremony? It's likely that some of them, especially teenagers, won't want to have all those people watching them. They can walk down the aisle and sit in the front row instead of standing at the altar the whole time. You can also have one of them do a reading or perform a piece of music if any of them are musically gifted.

I'm not sure how big is too big for you. But you could split the brothers up and have a few on your side with you! that way there isn't 9 on his side and just 3 on yours. You could also use a few of them to escort any mom's or grandma's if they don't already have an escort. Another option would be to have one or two of them do a reading during the ceremony or a toast at the reception.

Honestly I think that being ushers would be a good role for them!! They can also help escort the moms & grandmothers down the aisle, and they'll obviously be included in family photos and the rehearsal dinner!

I also like the suggestions of having some brothers do a ceremony reading or a reception toast!

Just thinking out of the box here, is there something within the ceremony that you could create that would highlight them all equally and be more special that the sterotypical tasks. First thing I thought of would be to walk you down the aisle which would be A LOT. But what if you create like a special reading (or prayer) or moment to highlight just those individuals that are important to you both but not wanting to have to coordinate a significant wedding party. Otherwise, I love the concept of Bridesmans- I wish I had some myself! My FH does not have any siblings of his own so my brothers will be standing beside him.
