S/O: Two Middle Names vs. Two Last Names

Jacqui76, on September 16, 2015 at 1:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

From the discussion about adding your husband's last name onto your own, this is my question. Some people move their maiden name to be a second middle name, and some add their married name as a second last name. Both have the end result of First Middle Maiden Married. So, how do you choose if you want two middle names or two last names? Are there pros/cons to each choice?

I do know! My middle name is my mom's name and I won't give that up.

My maiden name- I was so happy to get it back last December (6 years after my divorce) that now I am having mixed feelings about giving it up again.

I think two middle names is just easier to manage with paperwork. It's easier to drop a middle name or a middle initial if you don't have space to write out the whole thing. I've heard of people with two last names only using one or the other, but that seems extremely confusing to me.

Jacqui, If I were to divorce and remarry, I likely wouldn't change my name again after going back to my maiden name (which I would do asap). I think it really depends on what you want to go by. My full name is Lara Zain Pi (maiden) Pe (married) so now when I introduce myself, I am Lara Pe. If I decided on two last names, I would introduce myself as Lara Pi Pe. The other issue this brings up is having the same last name as any children we may have, but that depends on what you and your FH agree on in terms of your kids having one last name (namely his), or two last names.

I hope this isn't confusing as both my maiden and married names start with P so I was trying to figure out how to differentiate them.

I live in Texas so I'm only allowed three names on the drivers license. I'll be putting my maiden name as my middle name and taking FH's last name. I picked because I hate my middle name.

I do want to take my FH's last name, but I don't want to give up my maiden name again. I want all the names!!

The drivers license rules in NJ will probably play into my decision. I know they won't let you have a space in your last name. My best friend has a space in her married last name (not two last names) and the DMV made her squish the whole thing together with no space. I don't know if that's an extra headache since her social security card probably has a space in the last name, and her husband's birth certificate probably also has the space in the last name.

I'd rather have it as a second middle name than a hyphen last name. Much easier in my opinion.

I agree and I definitely don't want a hyphen. I'm either going to have two middle names or two last names.

Two middle names is much easier than two surnames (as someone who's always had two middles, but had former classmates with two/hyphened surnames who had such headaches once they started dealing with official documents.)

I have a regular name middle name plus my mom's maiden name as a second middle name and I decided that having three last names was a little too much and I'm very attached to my mom's maiden name because she only has sisters and I want to pass it on to my children as a middle name so I decided to be "first name" "original two middle names" "FH's last name" and just drop my last name.

Thank you for posting this!!! I was seriously struggling and didn't know if its totally nuts to have two middle names. I love my middle name and don't want to lose my maiden name completely, but I do want to take my husbands last name once we are married.

I am looking at this now. I am struggling to decide what to do. I don’t want to give up being an MU. But I also want to take my soon to be Husband last name. Much easier to say and pronounce.
