Sober Wedding

Natasha, on October 19, 2019 at 1:21 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 20

So, my fiance and I are both on the path of sobriety and it's kind of hard looking for plans on sober receptions/soda bars and how to make it fun. We at least already decided on sparkling cider instead of champagne for the toast and such but I honestly don't know how to make the juices or sodas placed on a cute looking display and if we even need to hire a bartender to pour our sodas? I don't know.

A venue gave us an idea of mocktails but my fiance is from a small town in the country while my family is from the city and he said that his family doesn't really know what mocktails are and I'm not sure if I want it there if they're only going to take juice or sodas. I'm just confused Smiley sad

Well you have a while to plan, but September/October books so quickly now! First of all, congrats on sticking to the path of sobriety. I know it can be difficult and I applaud you. I think that can have a great time with some fall flavored mocktails. I don't drink, but I'll get one whenever there is one offered Ata restaurant. They can be really chic, delicious and fun. And they'll be much cheaper because alcohol is expensive. That'll probably be fun for the city family. Since (if your date is correct) you'll be in fall season, I also think you could do some fun and more straightforward drinks for the country folks. Hot apple cider, hot chocolate, cream soda, something pumpkin-y.

    Hope that's helpful!

If it's a winter wedding, hot chocolate bars are cute and fun! For warmer weddings, what about a mimosa bar type set up, but with sparkling soda instead of traditional bubbly?
Also, they may not know what mocktails are but who cares? They can learn! You could have a sign at your drink station and even list the ingredients!

My brother's wedding had really cute glass dispensers for different drinks like lemonade. I suggest getting real lemonade, if the weather is cool you can have apple cider, etc... It gives it a little class and still makes it fun. 😊

Mocktails are fun, and I feel certain if his family doesn’t know what they are they’ll be able to figure it out. You can always do fun things like root beer floats and that punch with the sherbet in it (can’t remember what it’s called but it’s yummy).

Congratulations on you and FH's sobriety journey!!

Fall is a wonderful time of year for non-alcoholic beverage choices!! You could have a hot chocolate/coffee bar complete with signature choices and Sparkling Cider toast.

I don't think anyone would find this unusual or not enjoy themselves, especially if they know you and FH's journey. You could also go nuts with the food and entertainment based on the money you will save from not having alcohol.

So many cute ideas listed! You could do so many great options for this. I LOVE the idea of the mocktails. They definitely keep the elegance factor up. I attended a wedding where they had different flavored ciders like a blackberry, cherry, apple etc and served them in beer mugs. No alcohol needed. If it is cold, I love the idea of a hot chocolate bar and you could even do an apple cider bar.

My venue offers a gourmet coffee bar which could be a fun idea for you! They put out different flavors of coffee, tea and hot chocolate with flavored syrups, milk/creamer, and toppings like whipped cream, chocolate chips, marshmallows.

For cold drinks I would suggest either hiring a bartender just to make it still feel more upscale, or to create a serve yourself station with cute drink dispensers. Talk to your caterer about what they offer.

I think a bar with hot chocolate, apple cider, maybe a pumpkin spice drink would be great! I think it's a good idea to get creative with this because I've heard so many people complain about "dry" weddings. But if there are some fun options, rather than just soda, I'm sure everyone will love it!

Hi there! our wedding was yesterday and was a completely dry wedding! We just made sure to have lots of other refreshments and activities. We did old fashioned sodas for a fun drink and to toast with and it went great. People stayed until we started breaking the venue down and some people even danced! i think do what excites you and makes you comfortable!

Proud of you, we know that journey first hand!

Congratulations on your and your FS sobriety! I would suggest pintrest. They have so many cute and fun ideas for sodas! I don't see a reason you would need a bartender for that.

Congrats on your journey. I am happy for the both of you. I think the mocktails are a good idea. I am sure the guests will understand and respect it. Just dress up the drinks as if they are the real deal. Even give them cute names or something. It will all work out. Smiley smile

If it's a more formal wedding, I would hire a bartender still and have fun "mocktails" for it to feel classier for people. People will figure them out, just put a sign that said "mocktails (no alcohol)" with the list of ingredients for people to order, then list what else is available to drink. In my experience, dry/cash bar weddings have less partying/dancing but that really depends on the crowd.

    Congrats on your sobriety!

I think the hot chocolate, coffee, & tea bars are cute ideas. Or like for the juices/sparkling water/etc you could have fruit to go in them. My family does a punch for stuff like baby showers where you mix green sherbet, pineapple juice, & sprite...it's my favorite non-alcoholic party drink.

Also, when you're looking on Pinterest or other places for ideas, maybe try searching for baby showers, kids birthday parties, pretty much any kind of party where alcohol wouldn't normally be served.

    Good luck & congrats again!

The sky is the limit for choices. Sparkling cider, flavored lemonades, sodas, hot cocoa/spiced cider for fall/winter, flavored sparkling water, virgin frozen drinks, sherbet punch, floats, etc.

You can hire a company that specializes in serving to set it out or have the caterer's bartenders serve.

I love a good mocktail! It is your wedding so do what makes you and your fiancé comfortable! Think of it as personal beliefs, if you were a strict vegan you wouldn't serve meat at your wedding. Put on your website or make a cute sign that explains what a Mocktail is or do what you would do for a cocktail pick a cute drink for you, and then a cute one for your fiancé and explain below the contents of the drink. Also if you are doing it as a venue that has a separate bar (hotel, restaurant, etc) they can always pay for their own drink there. But if you are a firm no alcohol at my wedding, your guests should understand its your day, just make sure guests are informed about it, great thing for the website.
