Sola Flowers-help!

NatHam, on March 10, 2017 at 12:13 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 16

I have been looking at almost every past discussion about sola flowers, I ordered some today, but I have a few questions.

What is the best way to attach the wire?

What did you find to be the best way to dye them?

Where did you buy fillers for your bouquet?

Post some pictures if you have them!

I didn't assemble them myself, I bought them from a shop on Etsy that did all the craftsman ship. Have you searched google or YouTube??

I bought wire stems from joann fabrics. Michaels or hobby lobby has them too. Basically you can just poke the wire stem thru the bottom of the flower very gently and then surround it in hot glue. Let them sit for a minute before moving them. I bought mine already dyed, but I did read a tutorial on it. You can just mix acryllic paint and water I believe. But you want it to be thin and liquidy.

@Juli, I did, but they have a couple different ways, just wanted opinions on which may be easiest and most effective.

Thanks @Jamie, I have a Joanns next to my house, I will stop there since I didn't buy the wire yet. Does the wire poke all the way through and then you twist the wire around each other? or you just poked it into the flower? Maybe I should look into buying some already dyed. I only bought about 48 flowers for now.. will need more.

Don't poke all the way thru, but go most of the way. Even if you poke thru it is hardly noticeable. I did it a few times.

I'm almost done with all mine and I dyed, stemmed, and arranged them so I'm happy to help answer questions! For dying, do a full bottle of acrylic paint (like the standard size bottle, not the huge ones) and some water. Depending on how dark of a color you want, adjust how much water but start slow! Just dip and then shake off in the sink and let them dry for at least 24 hours.

As far as stemming, it depended on the flower for me. For the roses, I poked the floral wire through the little nub that hangs down, bent the wire over, and twisted it together (like an inch) and put hot glue at the hole and also where the wire twist ends so the wire wasn't sharp. For the other flowers, I just poked a hole into the bottom (like PP said), took the wire out, filled the tiny hole with hot glue, and then put the wire back in. Then put a tiny bit more hot glue. I'm paranoid about them falling apart haha.

For filler I got some great stuff at Michaels! Buy a few things and play around.

@Meghan, thank you! I just ordered some different flowers since Saveoncrafts didn't have everything I wanted. I am just so excited for these to come so I can start playing around, so unique.

what color did you dye yours? I want some of them a deep plum color and most of what I see is people dying them lighter colors!

Welp, because of this post, I'm now venturing into the land of attempting to make my bouquet and centerpieces out of dyed sola flowers..................THANKS A LOT GUYS.

But really thank you because I needed another quick-to-start, slow-to-finish project. This sounds fun.

This is a bridesmaid bouquet. My bouquet doesn't have purple - just pink and natural white with some pink preserved roses. I don't have a picture but I'll take one later. I had to play around with the water ratio to get that dark of a color. It's called Aubergine and I can look up the brand if you need!

@Meghan. That's perfect, the girls have plum dresses, so that is so pretty. No need to look for the brand, I will end up going shopping and try to match it perfectly with my dress swatch. I love your bouquets by the way!

@annuhlee - WW was the reason I started looking into Sola flowers hahahah! but so glad I did.

I bought some from saveoncrafts.com and some on ecoflower.com (the loose ones) they seem to be close to the same price!

I did my bouquets (and boutonnieres) as well. I second what everyone said about the stemming, hot glue is your friend and since you won't see it in the bouquet after, it doesn't really matter if it's not that pretty. I found the roses the most difficult to stem, since you had to bend the wire around them and couldn't just poke it through like others.

One thing to keep in mind when you dye them - let them dry completely! I lost a batch because I put them in plastic bags too early and then they got moldy.

Here are some old posts by Kim that helped me when I was doing my own bouquets:

@Corinne, I love yours, very pretty! Thanks for the tips. I am not using any roses, so that's a huge plus!

I am just so excited for this, all my flowers just shipped too! Smiley smile
