Sola flowers?

Katie, on April 26, 2020 at 6:58 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 4
With all my Covid induced free time, I’ve decided to order our wedding flowers suuuuper early. We’re using sola wood flowers and I’m super excited to start working with them. Any tips for making them as lifelike as possible? Ideally I’d be able to mimic something like the below pic. I’m anxious about painting the blue in the middle of the anemones and haven’t been able to find a good thistle option yet. Also any recommendations for storing them long term before our wedding? There is a YouTube channel call oh your lovely. She has so many tutorials about sola flowers that I found super helpful, I’m also using them as well.

Hi Katie!! I've got no DIY skills, but it might be helpful to check out some of these past projects with tips from other WeddingWire brides:

I just made all my bouquets and boutonnieres out of sola wood flowers. My advice is make sure you have plenty dye/paint before you start. You can use any acrylic paint mixed with equal parts water to dye the flowers. Order extra flowers because life happens. Add a little bit of glycerol to your dying mixture to keep the flowers soft, if you don't they will dry and harden (making them easier to break). Dye your flowers outside because it can get messy. ( I seriously knocked over a big bowl of dye which went everywhere.) Make sure your flowers are COMPLETELY dry before putting two different colors next to each other. Pre poke your stem hole before you put your hot glue on the stem wire. I ordered extra greenery from Micheals because it is cheaper. If you want the wire stems to feel thicker you can wrap them in green floral tape. When you are arranging your flowers use the wire stems to your advantage.

With the blue centers on your flowers I would dye them white or ivory and let them mostly dry and then go back in with blue paint (not mixed in with water) and use a small brush to add the blue details.

If you have an air brush you can use that to dye the flowers as well. This is what looks the realest. Oh You're Lovely on youtube has a tutorial for air brushing sola wood flowers.

Good luck! I hope they turn out great!
