Solder Regret?

Krystin, on March 11, 2019 at 6:33 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 10

So... we picked out and ordered our bands this past weekend! YAY! FH went with a classic high polished gold band and I picked out 2 very simple diamond bands to go on both sides of my solitaire diamond. Now here is my thing... I love my solitaire, but I'm really afraid of soldering these rings to it just in case we decide to upgrade my bands later on. Any advice? I don't want to ruin any of my rings by not soldering them together, but I also don't want to have to say good-bye to a ring a love down the road if these three rings become one.

If it were me, I’d wait to solder if you’re unsure. You should be fine for a while before not having them soldered would cause any damage. You can always give it some time to see what you think after wearing them separate. You may decide you like the versatility of having them be separate rings.

I'd wait to solder untill you are totally sure. To me soldering seems so final.

Are there wraps that you could put around them on the underside?

I really like the ring wraps... has anyone had two identical rings made into a wrap? That way its not a permanent part of my ring but still has a little "hold" to it.

I'm not sure! I thought about that too.

I'm not a fan of soldering in general. The spinning and misalignment of the rings is annoying for sure, but the soldering is so permanent. It eliminates your ability to just wear one ring or the other (You might want the option to just wear your wedding band(s) sometimes.) and if you lose one ring you lose all of them.

Soldering isn't permanent at all. You can have the rings soldered and if you hate it, have it undone with minimal fuss. Though, do try them together first for a while unsoldered just to see if it doesn't bother you.

Did the jeweler tell you they couldn't unsolder once the rings were soldered? That might have something to do with the width of the bands or placement of the diamonds if so, but they should be able to explain that.

Not soldering them. Would like my engagement ring to be passed down as a family heirloom

I've never even heard of unsoldering! I'll have to look into this. Thanks!

Mine will be the same way. my engagement ring was FH's great grandmother's ring. it is also very delicate and I am not a delicate person. my wedding band is a gold band with inlayed diamonds (much less delicate) after the wedding I will just wear my wedding band and put my engagement ring in our safe except for special occasions. after a large anniversary (probably 10 or 20 year) we will pick a new ring for me and start making plans to pass the engagement ring on.
