Something old and something borrowed

Ciara, on February 16, 2022 at 2:19 PM Posted in Planning 11 8
I really want to follow the tradition of something old/new/borrowed/blue, but I’m having trouble figuring out my something old and something borrowed. My something new will be my dress, tiara, and veil and my something blue will be light blue shoes. I have read several other posts looking for recommendations for this tradition and have looked online, but they all usually have something to do with jewelry and I’m not a big jewelry person and don’t plan on wearing any jewelry other than my engagement ring and later on wedding band at the ceremony. Does anyone have any recommendations for something old and something borrowed that is not jewelry? Thank you in advance!

Is there a ribbon or some sort of cloth with special meaning that you have that you can use as your something old? You could wrap it around your bouquet as you walk down the aisle. Or, a locket with a photo of your grandparents or parents or even a photo of you when you were younger that you could include in your bouquet?

For your something borrowed, maybe a hair clip from a friend, or a handkerchief from your fiance, or a keychain from someone close to you?

Instead of jewelry, you could add something to your bouquet. I pinned my grandmother’s pearl brooch to mine

For something old, I had a handkerchief that was my baby bonnet at my baptism. For borrowed, we used our planner’s cake stand/ cake knife

I’m using one of my grandmother’s clutches/purses as my something old. Perhaps, you can borrow one from a special woman in your life?

My something new is a 9 carat tennis necklace that I purchased for myself. My something blew her my shoes, and my something old is my grandmother‘s rhinestone bracelet. Perhaps you can wear some flowers in your hair that are blue, or a broach in your bouquet. Or perhaps linens or champagne flutes that were owned by your mom or grandmother? I don’t know seems like skies the limit here to think outside the box on this one.

It doesn’t have to be jewelry and often isn’t. Those articles are likely written by someone in the jewelry industry pushing sales subliminally. The only “requirement” that is encouraged is that it be on your person, but even then no one is going to keep score and “you aren’t really married because you did this wrong” as it’s all in fun. Your old can be anything you already own. Underwear, shoes, anything. Borrowed can be anything. Let the important ladies helping you get ready know you are following the tradition and they may offer something for you to wear/carry during the ceremony.
