Song for Father-Daughter Dance

Cathryn, on September 28, 2009 at 10:37 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 15

I'm having a difficult time finding a song. My father and I are not very close, but I still want to do the Father-Daughter dance. The problem is that I don't want a song that is overly emotional because I don't want it to seem forced or fake. Does anyone have any ideas? I

Older songs are great for something nice but not overly emotional. Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, etc are always good places to start. They are sweet and fun to dance to, but without all of the waterworks.

Best wishes on a fabulously flawless day!

Here are some suggestions for a nice but not overly emotional father-daughter dance song:

    -- Bob Dylan's "Forever Young"

    -- Ben E. King's "Stand By Me"

    -- Temptation's "My Girl"

-- Natalie & Nat King Cole "Unforgettable"

    -- Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely"

-- Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life"

-- Jimmy Buffett's "Little Miss Magic"

-- Sinatra's "The Way You Look Tonight"

-- Kermit the Frog's "Rainbow Connection" (seriously!)

Another option is to ask your father if there are any songs that he associates with you as a young girl -- for example, some rock'n'roll or pop song that he used to sing to you when you were a little girl. The song itself might not be overly emotional, it's just the memories your dad may have associating you with that song.

Finally, consider an instrumental tune (no lyrics); something nice to dance to, be it a waltz, fox-trot, or slow dance of any kind.

I had sort of the same issue.. I went through picking sappy stuff and then, I found "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor.. here are the lyrics

    When youre down and troubled

And you need a helping hand

And nothing, whoa nothing is going right.

Close your eyes and think of me

And soon I will be there

To brighten up even your darkest nights.

You just call out my name,

And you know whereever I am

Ill come running, oh yeah baby

    To see you again.

    Winter, spring, summer, or fall,

All you have to do is call

And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.

    Youve got a friend.

    If the sky above you

Should turn dark and full of clouds

And that old north wind should begin to blow

Keep your head together and call my name out loud

And soon I will be knocking upon your door.

You just call out my name and you know where ever I am

Ill come running to see you again.

    Winter, spring, summer or fall

All you got to do is call

And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Hey, aint it good to know that youve got a friend?

    People can be so cold.

Theyll hurt you and desert you.

Well theyll take your soul if you let them.

Oh yeah, but dont you let them.

You just call out my name and you know wherever I am

Ill come running to see you again.

Oh babe, dont you know that,

    Winter spring summer or fall,

Hey now, all youve got to do is call.

Lord, Ill be there, yes I will.

    Youve got a friend.

    Youve got a friend.

Aint it good to know youve got a friend.

Aint it good to know youve got a friend.

    Youve got a friend.

Why don't you just use Daddy's Little Girl? It's a basic and who knows, it just might get him alittle closer to you while you're dancing with him. Give it a try if you like??

My dad and I danced to "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder. It was upbeat and fun and we had a great time twirling around the dance floor! It kept us both from tears and kept the mood upbeat!
