Sos on Invitations

Stephanie, on December 7, 2019 at 11:36 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

I have quite a few girlfriends that I will be inviting to my wedding, who have significant others. I want them to be able to bring their SO, but how do I go about wording the invitation. Is it weird to go Ms. Smith and Guest when I know the SO name? But if I include the SO name, what is the etiquette in the order of names? Should it be Mr. Jones and Ms. Smith, even though it's really my girlfriend I am inviting?

“And guest” is rude when you know they have a significant other. Their SO deserves to be called by their name. You would list your friend first on the invite if they’re dating. If they’re married, the husband is typically first. That depends on how traditional you are though.

Maybe lost your friends name and state that 2 seats have been reserved for you?

I've been addressing mine with either Mr and Mrs John Smith for the married ones. Or Mr John Smith and Ms Jane Jackson if I'm closer with the guy. Or Ms Jane Jackson and Mr John Smith if I'm closer to the woman.

You can put their name if you know it, if not put & Guest.

You can put them in whatever order you want, I don't think that men need to go first so I put my friend's name first Smiley smile

We're putting the name of our friend first, and their date's name after.

For our STDs, we listed both names and simply placed the name of the person we were closer to first. For example, for one couple, we are closer to the guy, so it was addressed to Brian S and Hailley T. For another couple, we are closer to the girl, so it was addressed to Jessica B and Brian L. (Obviously we used full names, but for the sake of privacy...). If you don't know the name of a SO, I would reach out to that friend to find out. I'm sure they'd be touched to know you took the time to address their SO by name.

If people had significant others but weren't married, we just said "Jane Smith and Joe Jones".

For my unmarried friends, I put the friend first and her date second!
