Special things to do with mother of the bride

Sarah, on February 28, 2021 at 6:10 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 6

I live away from home and haven't seen my mom in two years (work/COVID). I'm planning to travel home to see my mother in a few months since we'll both have been vaccinated and I feel comfortable going to see her once she's had her vaccines.

I've kept her up to date on my engagement and wedding, but I already have my dress (ordered from BHLDN) so there's no occasion to go dress shopping or other traditional mother-daughter wedding prep. She's very low key and has even said if I elope she'll be happy for me.

I'd like to do something special when I see her when I'm home that's just for us, but brunch isn't really her thing and I'm not sure what other special moments we could share about my wedding that also keep social distancing in mind (she lives in a state where people largely refuse to wear masks...)

I'm not having a bridal party so there wouldn't be an expectation for a bridal shower, and I think it would be more meaningful to just keep it between the two of us.

Any ideas for mother-daughter pre-wedding bonding ideas would be much appreciated!

(no wedding date set and I'm an only child so this would be her only wedding as mother of the bride)

Can you go shopping for her dress/outfit? Or maybe browse for flowers together if you haven't picked them out yet? Not really wedding related, but you could go to a spa or get your nails done if she's interested in that.

I was just going to ask about her outfit. Has she chosen hers?

I thought about picking out her outfit, I like that idea. She’s very low key and low maintenance so I usually have to drag her to pedicures 😂

Do you like outdoor activities and animals. I recommend doing horseback riding if you both will enjoy it

As others suggested, I would say go shopping for her outfit. I did this with my mom earlier this year and then we went out and had a nice lunch and it was a really fun day, just me and her. If you don't have jewelry, you could always go jewelry shopping either at a store or through some of her jewelry too, depending on what you're wanting to wear. My mom and I made another night out of just going through all of our jewelry together and picking out some pieces I wanted to wear and then we did some online shopping to match the jewelry we picked out. It was a lot of fun!

Shopping for her outfit could be good. I know my mom has a good amount of heirloom jewelry and items that she used at her wedding that she has available for me to go through in case I want to use any of them. If your mom has anything like that, it might be nice to make mimosas/tea/other-drink-of-choice and bond over stories of each of those pieces. If those don't exist, shopping for your accessories could also be good. Are there any activities that you guys enjoy doing together? It doesn't even necessarily have to be specifically wedding-related. For instance, if you both enjoy puzzles you could find a difficult one (or even a wedding-themed puzzle) and spend an afternoon making it together. Something like that wouldn't even require leaving her place. It sounds like your mom's priority is more on spending time with her daughter, whether the activity is wedding-related or not.
