Special treatment for being newlyweds?

I got to hang out with my wonderful bridesmaids this weekend. And they were saying that when I go on my honeymoon, I need to show that we are newlyweds because we'll get special treatment.

I call BS on this. FH and I travel a lot and haven't seen any special treatment for newlyweds on planes.

So for my married ladies, did you get anything special from your airline for being a newlywed?

Alcohol is free/included on international flights anyway. If we got any upgrades or anything along the way, I would probably give credit to our travel agent for advising lodgers/service providers that it's our honeymoon, but I'll still wear the shirts on the plane!

    Edit: typo

My cousin got her flight upgraded because they were on their honeymoon and wearing their t-shirts. However, you stand a better chance of those kinds of upgrades if you are traveling on a weekday when they aren't as busy.

I keep telling FH that since we never went out to celebrate our engagement, when we go to dinner we should tell them we just got engaged to see if we get free drinks. Not sure I'd actually go through with it, esp since we've been engaged for a year now.

@JerseyJen I would just ask, especially at the hotel, if they do anything special for newlyweds.

@kimi, we went out to dinner right after, and then to a show, and both of us were too sheepish to even try! We might try the mr and mrs shirts on the honeymoon flight, since it's a little less direct...

I purchased a shirt from VS that says "Better Half" in rhinestones to wear on the flight.

I know the resort does special stuff for newlyweds. ETA: So many grammatical errors!

I know you get a TON of free stuff at Disney if you wear the bride and groom ears and button.

The night FH gave me my ring, the restaurant gave us our meals on the house.

I didn't mention that we'd been engaged for months and he was only just getting around to the ring! We did leave a big tip though, so I don't feel too bad about it.

We got champagne and chocolate on the plane. I didn't actually right out say we were newlyweds (not on purpose anyway).

The flight attendants were going down the aisle giving everyone their drinks (even though it was an international flight, alcoholic drinks were not included) - I think we got apple juice? I also decided to order some of their food - Skyr and Marriage Bread (I asked how to pronounce them in Icelandic and the flight attendant told me). Well I guess because I asked (and maybe ordered something?) it got us to talking and she asked if we were just doing a stopover in Iceland. I told her "No. We are staying for a week. We wanted to do something different for our honeymoon rather than just laying on a beach. Originally we wanted to do Antarctica but since it was a little too expensive we decided on Iceland." She said congratulations and wished us well. Then as I am about to take a small nap (DH was already sleeping) she tapped on my shoulder and came with a platter of Icelandic Chocolate (2 small milk chocolate samples and one big toffee and sea salt milk chocolate bar), 2 mini champagne bottles, and some champagne glasses, with a very very sweet note). We mentioned it on some of the excursions we took (only because people asked why were in Iceland) but I don't remember getting anything else (besides on the plane on the way to Iceland) because were were newlyweds/on our honeymoon.

    ETA: clarity.

@Kimi I totally got a free drink the day we got engaged! It was FH's birthday, and my MOH shares his birthday and surprised me by coming down to see us (it was a surprise-filled day, lol). Well we went to a bar after dinner and the bartender asked if we were celebrating anything, my FH and MOH said it was their birthday and she brought free shots. I said "hey, I got engaged today, can I get a free shot?" and she brought me one too

I had to email my sister a picture of her wedding invite. The resort gave them a bunch of perks if they could prove they were newlyweds

Haha well were flying on a Tuesday in November so hopefully it'll be empty and they'll be more willing to upgrade!! Smiley smile

I just asked FH if he would wear a husband t-shirt if it could possibly get us drinks or upgrades and he said "I'll wear the shit out of the shirt, babe!"

Ugh. Asking for free shit is tacky as all hell.

Yes, it may come up organically that you're newlyweds, but to straight out ask for things? Ew.

Having worked in restaurants for a lot of years, I can't tell you how often I've heard, "It's our honeymoon, do we get something free?" Or birthday, anniversary or whatever. So classless.

Please please please don't do this!

Maui, we would never straight out ask. But we're kinda not opposed to wearing cheesy Tshirts to naturally draw attention to it. And like I said, we don't want or expect anything at the hotel. We're not opposed to anything on the plane though!

I agree that wearing t-shirts is totally OK! (Actually, I think it's really cute, but FH would never.) Don't get me wrong, I always acknowledge a special occasion! Free sparkling, free dessert, etc! Some people are just so brazen about it.
