Speeches / Toasts

Carly, on February 1, 2020 at 1:59 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6
So, I need help deciding which family members I should ask to do speeches or toasts.

We aren’t having a wedding party. His parents are paying for 90% of the wedding, while my divorced mom is contributing the other 10%.

I was thinking of asking his mom and/or dad to do the welcoming toast & blessing. And, then ask my mom to do a toast some time after that during the reception.
Does that sound fair?

I think that sounds fair. You could also ask a close, mutual friend, of both you and your FH to say something.

I agree, sounds like a great plan. I like Meghan’s idea too, if you have a close friend that knows you both well you could ask them to say something

I think that sounds great, and agree about possibly also including a close friend, if there is someone who would want to share their thoughts on your big day. I suggest describing what you're asking people to do as a "toast," rather than a "speech," and being very clear about a relatively short time requirement (3 minutes is a good max -- I've taught Public Speaking for 25+ years...). You and FH might also plan a brief "response," following the others' comments. It will give you a chance to thank your guests and let them know how much it means to the two of you that they were there to share in your day. (You'll still want to make an effort to talk with everyone individually, but a public response is still good!) If you're having a DJ, I'd be sure they know the exact plan for who is speaking, and the plan for when (and how long); they can help manage the process so guests know who's is speaking and keep things moving. Good luck!
