Spinoff- did your first dance have meaning?

klimberkat, on February 16, 2016 at 10:52 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 23

I love seeing what everyone else chose for their first dance. We're currently between Ben Folds "Luckiest" and "First Day of my Life by Bright Eyes. FH seems to think the first dance should have meaning and keeps saying he's going to make up a story about whatever we pick. I said not many couples past high school have a "song", but he insists that we're the one couple in the world without a song of our own.

We do have an artist we both love, but his songs are not appropriate for a wedding (Butch Walker).

Is your first dance song something of significance, or did you just search for a song that you liked and that had lyrics that rang true to your relationship?

My FH is obsessed with the Aladdin song, A whole new world. He says it's super symbolic because our lives will be beginning in a whole new way after we get married. He says the magic carpet ride represents how he wants to feel about me always, magical and happy. It was one of his few requests, so what the heck! It means a lot to him so Aladdin here we come! It's growing on me, and I could care less if someone gives us side eye because I know it would make him so happy and he would have a major grin on his face. He always sings the song to me too!

We don't have our song as a first dance...mostly because it is Daft Punk's Get Lucky and not really appropriate. We are still going to have it played during the reception. We are picking a song that is romantic and we love for the first dance.

Alyssa, that is so sweet. DH and I have a "song" (he picked it right after we started dating but its "Can't Get Enough" by Black Eyed Peas so that wouldn't work) but we both liked "I Won't Give Up" so we went with that. There wasn't really any special significance to it. The song I danced to with my uncles (my dad was there but couldn't dance) was "What the World Needs Now" by the Carpenters which does have significance. My mother's mother had a wind-up music box the we would always wind up when we were children and it played that song. Now it always reminds me of my Nana (and I know my uncles know the song and why it reminds me of my nana). DH and his mother danced while we were dancing and both she and DH were okay with that as well so it was good with everyone.

Ours is "Tenerife Sea" by Ed Sheeran. We were listening to the multiply album in the car. When that song came on FH said that when we get married this should be our first dance. A week later he proposed during that song at the Ed Sheeran concert. We were there celebrating our 3 year dating anniversary.

ETA - My parents were struggling to come up with a song. They listened to hundreds, then found theirs at a club in Baltimore. As long as it has meaning to you, it doesn't need to have a history.

We're picking Can't help falling in love with the version by Hayley Reinhart. We both heard song and loved it. We also considered love story by Taylor swift because we both love it.

Our song is "Rough Hands" by Alexisonfire so super inappropriate for a first dance. Instead we chose "I Wanna Grow Old With You" by Adam Sandler because it's adorable, sweet, describes us to a tee, and is less than 3 minutes long. Perfect.

I love "The Luckiest," and that is likely what I'm walking down the aisle to! We don't really have a song, but we are possibly picking something uptempo for our first dance - we really really love "Be My Forever" by Christina Perri and Ed Sheeran, but I also love "I Was Made for Loving You" by Tori Kelly and Ed Sheeran as well. We just need to figure out how we're going to dance, because I'm so used to slow dancing and I don't want to look dumb.

We had a song picked and then my fiancé heard a song in the radio. And then I listened to it and the lyrics were just EVERYTHING.

Die a happy man by Thomas Rhett. He wrote it for his wife and it was perfect for us

Our song is "you're in my heart" by Rod Stewart, I just wish it was shorter lol four minutes is a long time for two people who don't know how to dance.

We used "Danny's Song" by Loggins and Messina. It's a different pick for a first dance song, but it's the song that DH used to sing to me all the time when I was pregnant with our first.

No we don't have a song and we are high school sweethearts. We haven't officially picked a song but we are leaning towards you and me by lighthouse. I think you should just pick a song you both like and represents you both. It's funny, I've asked quite a few older married ladies what their first dance song was and it's funny how many don't remember.

When we got accepted to different colleges and we met up to talk about either going long distance or breaking up, before he could let me speak, he said he had a song for me to listen to. He said that he wanted it to be about us someday. That was our first dance song.

    "Dear Bobbie" by Yellowcard.

Our song is The Locket by Lauren Alaina. When my fiancé and I first started dating, at the end of our first month together I had to tell him that I needed to go through 6 months of chemo. I fully expected him to run away but he stayed by my side through the entire time. The morning after my last dose of chemo, I was in my Spanish class. When I walked out of my class, he was sitting there playing that song with a dozen red roses. While I went to hug him he slipped a jewlery box in my hand and when I opened it, it was a heart shaped locket with our pictures inside that was engraved I Love You with a rose (my favorite flower). I knew then he was the one and that ended up being our song. Plus any man that walks through a college campus with a dozen roses??? How can you not fall weak in your knees! Here we are 4 years later, we own a house, we are getting married AND I have worn that same Locket every single day since then. It is our first dance song and has SO much meaning and memories to us. Smiley smile

Our song, if we had one, would be Something Corporate's "I Kissed a Drunk Girl" bc that's how we met (no judgment just real talk) so we will obviously not be doing that... I've just been keeping an ear out for sweet songs in a genre I think he would like, and will ask him to weigh in / start thinking of ideas when we're closer.

Btw I love both of those songs and am thinking of walking down the aisle to "This Is The First Day of My Life" and cry every time I hear it now <3

We're doing O I Long to Feel Your Arms Around Me by Father John Misty. It has meaning to us since we had a really romantic moment at his concert at our 1st Bonnaroo/trip together- though honestly it could have been 1 of several of his songs! Part of me wants to change it to the more upbeat Chateau Lobby

Btw I LOVE Butch Walker, but totally agree that it's not really first dance material. My favorite band is taking back Sunday...same issue. The closest thing we have to a song is one that describes us. We both smile whenever it plays its 'A woman like you' by Lee Brice. I think we'll dance to that son at our wedding, but our first dance will be something more traditional like 'Never Stop' by safety suite.

Our first dance is The Luckiest. It isn't "our song". I downloaded a bunch of songs that I liked for our wedding, and when he heard that, he started crying. He hasn't had a lot of requests for the wedding, but one is that that is our first dance.
