Spotify DJ

Has anyone created their own wedding playlist and had friends man it for the reception, instead of hiring a dj? How did you do that...did you pay your friend? Did you ask a few if they would be willing to take turns so that they enjoy the party? Any tips on this? No "just hire a DJ" comments, please. OBVIOUSLY that is the alternative.

No. Have I seen it? Sure. is it effective? Nope. None of your friends want to work. They want to drink and dance and enjoy the evening,

Unless your strictly for background music, this is a poor substitute.

And no. You can't tell us how to post.

I did a spotify playlist. And synced it to the dj set up one of my aunts friend had. What I did was break the songs down into separate playlists, I had one for the ceremony, one for background music while we were eating, all the first dance songs in another playlist( father, daughter included) and then dance music in a separate one. I just got my uncle to stand by the set up and hit play at the appropriate times. He still was able to see everything and didn't have to do anything but hit play like 6 times. Just make sure you download the songs in the order you want to play them. You cant rearrange them after they're in the playlist.

You're welcome Smiley smile. Another thing is when you're downloading songs listen to it before you download because sometimes you might get a cover of the song instead of an original. We had a horrible time finding an original of Garth Brooks songs lol. Oh and don't forget to bring a charger for whatever device you're going to be using(tablet, phone laptop) because spotify KILLS your battery lol.

I have seen this at one wedding. It's the only wedding I've ever been to where no one danced.

@Celia that's a good point...maybe off season will pay off. As a side note, I don't care how ppl post, but I was trying to save people time on comments that aren't info I need to make an informed decision. If I can get a good deal on a DJ, great!

I literally found one for $700... to add a photo booth is $1100.... there's no way I have enough patience to make a Spotify playlist...

If your doing a spotify playlist for your wedding i strongly recommend paying for premium, you can always cancel it after the wedding but it will be $10 well spent. IDK i this is only for premium but on the computer you can re-arrange the order of the songs. Without premium you won't have any control over the order of songs in the playlist and you'll also have commercials.

@kiera yes! I actually already have premium with a discount. Can't imagine considering this without it!

I was considering this, but didn't want to fuss with it and found a DJ for $450. I had to search a bit to find one that fit my small wedding needs at a good price but eventually found one.

A DJ can read the room and see what should be played next, Spotify playlist can't.

A DJ can announce all the events (first dance, entrance Bouquet toss, etc) a Spotify playlist can't.

A DJ will ensure that the whole night goes smoothly, a Spotify playlist will just be another thing for you to worry about.

Get a DJ. It's well worth the money. Cut the money from somewhere else like favors or programs.

A DJ does much more than play songs. They run the show! Introductions/announcements, dances, cake cutting. They know how to get people on the dance floor and change the pace when needed. Also many include the uplighting for the event.

What if the wifi cuts out or there's a bad connection? What if your "hired guest" gets too drunk to care about a play list? What if the sound is bad? What if people just hate your play list and no one is dancing? Would you have a back up plan? There's way too much at risk and not worth the stress

A DJ is one of the most important vendors to hire. It was the second thing we looked for after booking our venue. Do what you can to hire a professional.

I don't understand why it's so hard to allow brides seeking an alternative to do something different seek advice on just that. She asked for advice on Spotify playlist. Is it so hard to pass this thread completely up if you don't have that advice to give? Obviously so...

On another note, it looks like you already have Premium covered. If you're going to do this, that would be my only suggestion to avoid ads.

We went to an 30 year anniversary and the couple actually used Spotify instead of a DH. My suggestions:

Make sure your playlist is very, very long. If your cocktail hour and reception are 4 hours combined, make sure your playlist is 6 hours. And please listen to your playlist from beginning to end.

ETA: @Kate, your analogy does not fit this situation. No one in their right mind would even consider your hypothetical scenario. Clearly she's asking for a reason (i.e. a DJ is not in the budget. The DJ she wants and can afford is not available, etc.) Telling her to hire a DJ is not helping her.

You can't properly give someone advice without discussing alternatives. Basically you're saying you want people to agree with you and just hear the positives of your particular situation...

I went to a wedding once where the Rabbi was in charge of the spotify playlist. The bride was very specific on what kind of music she wanted (nothing past 1920) and when the Rabbi left to take a bathroom break, the music stopped, and 2 teens sneaked over and put on Katy Perry. Bride flipped her shit and then was mad because no one was on the dance floor. I strongly encourage a DJ.

If you are worried about people dancing, you might ask for Songs I will get up and dance to on the RSVP cards. Also, my recommendation is early in the evening, play some songs the older folks would like to dance to (ask you parents), if there are many of them there. Maybe old motown songs, whatever, then maybe segway into like Earth wind and fire, and then into stuff you and FH want.

As to whether people will dance to spotify, plenty of people will. It is less formal.

Personal choice if you do group songs, like the macareni. I know many brides do not like stuff like this, but if you have a guest list with a lot of non-couples, like kids and older widows, they may like it.

    Good luck.

ETA -- if the worst thing that happens at a wedding is that teens put on a couple songs by Katy Perry, count your blessings. And btw, PLENTY of people here have complained that AFTER checking references, the DJ did not follow what they agreed to

Sure you can most definitely do your music with Spotify, I love Spotify!...

Here's the thing though, your Spotify isn't going to announce the events for the night (first dance, cake cutting, etc...). Do not ask a friend or family member to do it for you (announce or change music) it's very inconsiderate!

I've been to one too many of these weddings and there's a reason they aren't memorable in a good way.

Cut costs somewhere and hire a DJ who will keep things running smoothly and will make sure your guests are having a good time.
