Spray painting lanterns?

Melody , on September 19, 2016 at 1:58 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

Has anyone tried this? Was thinking making the lanterns teal for the centerpieces would tie them together perfectly. We are probably going to get the small ikea lanterns. Just dont know how they will take the paint? Also would there be any increased risks with flamabitliy if you painted them? (the outside only of course)?

I spray paint a lot of lanterns for different holidays and decorating schemes. No issue with the flame once the paint is dry even on the inside of the lantern. Metal takes the paint well. Make sure that the first few seconds of spray aren't on the lantern. I learned that the hard way. Smiley smile Splotches are a bitch.

We're using lanterns as well. Originally I was going to paint them but decided to leave as is and just fill the inside with decor to match my theme.

But if you do paint either try to take out the glass panels if possible or using painters tape.

We did this. We bought the Ikea lanterns in black and spray painted them white. They were fine once they dried. Unfortunately I'm not sure about flammability as we used them for flowers and battery operated votives instead.

I clicked on this only to add that you should buy a spray paint can handle. They're cheap and your finger will bless you for buying one.

UPDATE: Thank you for the advice, it totally worked. And for anyone thinking about doing it, the small idea lanterns panels DO come out. Was much easier than expected. 3 down 12 to go!

@melanie Thank you! they were only $3.99 a piece at ikea! These were the white ones, but they also come in black and silver and you might find some red and blue still from the 4th of July.

Thinking of spray painting mine. Any recommendations on paint brands and is priming them necessary?

@jamie I used a mix of rustolium and krylon color maxx. I started with white lanterns So i definitely did not need to prime them. One coat did it. I have a feeling two coats would work for those lanterns without priming. But that is just a guess.
