Spring 2021 Wedding... Save the Dates?

Brigitte, on September 18, 2020 at 2:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hi Everyone! First time posting here. I'm getting married 5.1.2021. I have all of our vendors booked already and everything is pretty much set. Both the ceremony and reception will be indoors. Our ideal guest list has about 170 people. If these were normal times, I should be sending out save the dates soon. But I'm starting to feel really nervous about it. Right now, our state has a 25 person limit on indoor venues. I'm just really starting to doubt that the limit will be raised to 100 people, let alone 150 people, for an inside reception by May. And I would hate to send out save the dates to all of these people if in Jan/Feb we would need to cut down the list. Should I just skip sending out save the dates and wait to see what December/January looks like and just do invitations? Or am I being totally crazy and overthinking this?

Can you send save the dates to your VIPs that you would invite if it stays at 25 people and then send out more if the capacity raises? It could kind of be perceived as having tiers but like you said you don’t want to have to reach out and uninvite either.

My big wedding is in March and I sent out save the dates to everyone at the end of June. If by March our 100+ guest list has to get cut down then I will decide then.

I would honestly just plan as if it’ll happen as normal just to be prepared.

I wouldn’t sweat it honestly. If things haven’t changed by then, everyone will understand the situation. Even if you have to make cuts eventually, most people would be happy to know they were in the original list ! I saw this have just received a save the date for an April wedding. It’s exciting to get even though I know we won’t be on the shortlist if they eventually have to make changes. I basically got it and thought “aww yay fun! I hope this gets to happen!” but I know there’s a chance it won’t. But now they have a sympathetic ally in me — if things don’t pan out, I’ll know what they’re going through and be able to be supportive. It’s easy when their date is on my fridge for it to be top of mind!

I do see both sides though. Sending only to VIPs is a great option, as well as sending save the dates with a covid disclaimer, or putting a note on the website warning of possibility of covid contingency plans . I think anything works , so I’d try not to stress too much about it— it definitely counts as beyond your control!

I agree with the others. Don’t borrow trouble until you have to. Send out the STDs & if it looks like you might have to cut the list later then do it at that time. Side note- my invitation vender recommended not mailing out the invites in December. They get lost in the holiday cards. I’m getting married on 4/3/21 & will be mailing mine out mid January.

Thanks for the input, ladies! I've decided to order save the dates, but only send them out as the number of people allowed limit increases. So for now, I'll send them to my definite 25 people, and if it goes up to 50, I'll send those out, and so on. I'll do the same thing with invitations when the time comes. That way, I won't need to un-invite people, as my mom and FMIL were concerned about. I just wanted to share just in case anyone else had this question!
