"Stand-in" Engagement Ring?

Christine, on April 1, 2014 at 9:40 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 29

The Knot posted this article yesterday about wearing a "stand-in engagement ring" when traveling: http://blog.theknot.com/2014/03/31/would-you-travel-with-a-placeholder-engagement-ring-like-lauren-conrad-did/?cm_mmc=facebook-_-march2014-_-blog-_-placeholderengagementring

My ring is fully-insured but it's a one-of-a-kind antique, so if I ever lost it, I'd get the full value for it, but I would never be able to get the same exact ring. I'm going to Vegas in a few weeks and now I'm kinda paranoid lol.

Any thoughts on this? Do you have a backup? Where do you wear yours? Is it not really necessary?

I will be wearing mine on vacation to Atlantic City this summer. We are renting a house with good friends. I will take it off when we go to the beach or pool, and while it's off - it will be in my ring box, in my purse. Plus it is insured, and I would be able to get another one just like it if anything happened.

Yeah. I think as long as I take it off when I'm in water and keep it in the room safe it should be alright...I had just never heard of getting a "stand-in" one before.

Honestly, depends on where I'm going. If I were going to Vegas I'd absolutely wear it. If I were going back to Guatemala or Nairobi where I stayed for a couple summers I would leave it off entirely.

I'm wearing my actual one on deployment and it is terrifying but i make a conscious effort to pay attention especially when running. If you don't want to then just don't bring it at all and save money or take it off for particular things like you mentioned.

My girlfriend was paranoid that her e-ring might be stolen while she commuted from NJ to NY everyday. So her husband purchased her a "traveling ring", it's beautiful & she loved it. Well,

her house was robbed & all of her jewelry including her e-ring & wedding band were stolen. We can't live in fear, F E A R- False Evidence Appearing Real. Live, enjoy and don't worry. We can't control everything & everybody. Wear it

    I think it's a great idea!

I actually already have a fake wedding set. My ex-bf was in the Navy and therefore not around for months at a time, and when I'd go out to the bar, I'd wear it as a "taken" sign. Think it cost like $20. Small price to pay if you don't feel safe wearing your real ring but would miss the sparkle!

My backup is a very plain Tungsten band I bought off Amazon for $7. I got it just for that purpose - in case I'm traveling, working out, swimming, etc. and I'm paranoid about losing my engagement ring.

I actually get more anxiety leaving it in my home, but I've been robbed before. If I do leave it at home, I hide it. But that's rare, just when I'm going to be doing lots of activity, going to the beach or the pool.

I'm going to wear a stand-in on our honeymoon in Mexico. It's for safety's sake as well as just the reality that I'm not going to be wearing my ring on the beach anyway (I wouldn't want it to get damaged) and I don't like the idea of leaving it unattended in the hotel room. I even wear my ring at the gym because I don't want to leave it in a locked locker.

I'm just going to get something simple and small to wear, and leave my rings with my mom for the week.

I am going to Argentina for 16 days to finish up my MBA. I have been going back and forth about whether or not I should wear my e-ring or not. I will be following this post!

Check out a Swarovski store for a stand in. They are really nice and usually cheap enough it wouldn't be a total loss.

I wore my rings on our honeymoon in Curacao. I locked them in the room safe whenever we were at the beach. One day I left my engagement ring in the safe, but wore just the band because I was unsure about the area we were traveling to that particular day.
I think if I were worried about safety, I would be more inclined to wear a plain band than to purchase something flashy, but fake.

I will be wearing my diamond wedding band on our honeymoon in Italy-it's very delicate and won't bring much attention to my hand. I also have a plain wedding band that may be a good backup. I'm not concerned about losing my e ring, just don't want people to notice it.

I have thought about it. If for some reason I did leave it home we have a 1000lb big ass safe that it would stay in. I will probably just wear my band if I am unsure when we travel.

I bought a stand in ering. I usually wear it to Vegas or concerts or anywhere there's a massive amount of people. Some people think its stupid or weird but it makes me feel better knowing if something happens I know it's not my real ring. I got mine at macys

I have a CZ bridal set that I bought off Overstock for like $12. Both my rings are white gold and it was bothering me to not have anything on my hand when they were sent off for 2 weeks at a time. I also bought a plain $6 sterling silver ring that I can wear to the beach and stuff like that. Both my actual rings have diamonds in them, and I don't want to get sand in the setting.

I do not wear mine to the gym because it spins and I am afraid I will damage it on a weight or the rowing machine or whatever. I used to wear a costume ring as a place holder because I was getting "hit on" and it really bothered me. But that was not much of a deterrent for the creepers in the elliptical room and the ring started to irritate my skin (I have a nickel allergy) so now I just don't wear any rings when I go to the gym.

I wore both my e-ring and wedding band when we went on our honeymoon to Mexico. I would lock them both up in the safe when we were at the pool, same with DH's ring (his is a little big and can slip off at the pool). But when we went out for dinner or anything like that I wore both of them. Mine aren't super flashy so I'm not afraid to wear them out pretty much anywhere.

I think constantly taking it off is more risky.

Losing it at home or falling out of your purse are much more likely. FH gave me the ring, and spent a lot of money on it. We pay to have it covered under our insurance, as well as the warranty we bought with it.

FH didn't spend the money for it to sit in my jewelry box at home. If your ring is getting damaged by the beach or pool it's probably not great quality, IMO. Diamonds are one of the hardest materials are they not?
