Standard or personal vows?

Vows are one of the most important aspects of any wedding ceremony. Are you and your significant other reciting standard vows or writing your own? If you intend to create your own vows, will they be super serious or include little antidotes or touches of humor that are personal to you and your fiance(e)?

I'm an extrovert and my now husband is a man of very few words, so we decided to recite standard vows. While I would have loved to write and share our own personal vows, I was afraid my vows would be 5 pages and his would be 5 words. LOL!

I do too. However, for me, I opted for the standard vows because it was something special about saying the same vows my parents and grandparents said to each other 42 and 65 years ago, respectively. I hope those vows carry my husband and I through for that many years as well.

I understand the crying part -- as I'm an all around crier (happy or sad). My friends call me the weeping willow! LOL! Either way (whether you or you officiant reads them), I'm sure your vows will be the perfect expression of your love.

Weeping Willow LOL! I'm stealing that for myself, I cry constantly for like no reason (most notably is seeing Santa on a local bridge waving at cars every Christmas Eve and I SOB uncontrollably, every year lmao) I most definitely can not get through my vows without SOBBING.

LOL! That's me!! I cry when I see other people cry (and I don't have to know why) and while watching tv shows and movies -- so much so that my husband often looks at me and asks " you know this is not real, right?" LOL! But you might be surprised when it comes to your wedding. As much as I cry, I didn't cry during my wedding. I started to cry when I first saw my dad, but he told me "don't start that crying" and then started telling jokes right before we walked in. I was shocked I didn't cry -- especially while walking down the aisle.

You're an empath! I cry when I see others cry too! I feel others emotions so strongly!

I'm planning on being a mess my whole wedding day, but we'll see I guess! If my FH husband doesn't cry as I walk down the aisle tho thats a different story LOL

Yes I am . . . but I also wanted to save my full face of makeup during my wedding. LOL! My MUA knows I am a crier and told me to sniff anytime I felt tears coming and that would stop the tears. I don't know if that's really true, but I took her at her word and believed her . . . and it worked for me. LOL!

We haven't decided for sure, but maybe a hybrid. Maybe the "do you take this (man/woman)?" and then our own vows. My fiance isn't a man of many words but when he gets emotional, he speaks the most beautiful words.

We wrote our own vows, but still had to say the standard vows as well as it was required by the state in order to be legally married. They were partially serious and partially funny.

We did not do personal vows because we are Jewish and had a Jewish wedding ceremony, and personal vows are not allowed. My Catholic friends have faced the same issue with their wedding ceremonies as well.

I didn’t realize that certain vows were legally required in certain states. That’s good to know!

Interesting — I didn’t know some religions do not allow personal vows. You learn new things everyday!

I would do standard in front of others. Too afraid of being judged. Seen with my own eyes wedding guests talk s*** about the nuptials' vows

We're planning to go with standard. Not only is it the legal verbage, I personally don't feel that comfortable with creative writing in that setting, though fiance has no qualms either way.

I can understand that. It’s unfortunate that people would talk about others’ vows.

I understand ... and you should most definitely do what makes you comfortable, especially on your wedding day!

Oh wow! Do you know what he’ll be singing? I’m a crier and that would definitely have me sobbing down the aisle. Lol!

My FH does not really express how he feels in detail too often. It doesn't bother me as much as it did in the beginning but I didn't want to just say standard vows and not really have them be personal to us. So we opted for writing our own vows and I'm sure it will have his usual sarcastic touch. It will just be more special.
