Standard or personal vows?

Vows are one of the most important aspects of any wedding ceremony. Are you and your significant other reciting standard vows or writing your own? If you intend to create your own vows, will they be super serious or include little antidotes or touches of humor that are personal to you and your fiance(e)?

I'm an extrovert and my now husband is a man of very few words, so we decided to recite standard vows. While I would have loved to write and share our own personal vows, I was afraid my vows would be 5 pages and his would be 5 words. LOL!

We plan on writing our own vows! They will be simple but meaningful. We don't want to alienate anyone by including inside jokes.

We are doing both! We will do the standard vows first. But will have the time after to share our own. My fiancé is extremely sentimental and always loves writing me letters and notes. So, If we don't give him the time to say his own vows he might actually faint! lol

Writing personal vows will give him the perfect opportunity to express himself -- sarcasm and all! But even with the sarcasm (he sounds a lot like me), the expression of love with shine through!

LOL! I love this! My husband swears he doesn't care about anything, but he's the pickiest person ever. This expression is me all day!

Well, maybe you can meet in the middle and do like some of the other posters suggested and modify the standard vows to make them personal to you . . . or say personal vows privately.

Oh goodness! No fainting on wedding day!! LOL! That's so nice that he's sentimental . . . sounds like he has a way with words. Should be interesting what he comes up with!

LOL girl! I am so over it sometimes so I understand! I will take your suggestions and review what others have suggested. I already know that the man isn't trying to hear anything about saying the personal vows privately. Just the most!

We are doing the standard at the ceremony. However, we will have our Maid of Honor/Best Man take hand-written letters to each other before the ceremony!

That sounds lovely. I thought that's what my husband and I were doing when we exchanged small gifts before the ceremony. I spent a lot of time finding a blank card that said "For My Husband On Our Wedding Day" and almost a week writing it. He got a nicely wrapped gift and a heartfelt card. I got my gift (a very lovely one) in a gift bag -- no card. LOL!

We are doing both. I'm a lot better with written word than my FH despite being more introverted and was worried about how much longer mine would be as well, so we did discuss and agree on a reasonable length to aim for. Mine are going to be mostly serious but I'm definitely throwing in a few lighthearted lines. We are a very playful couple and love making each other laugh, so it wouldn't be us if we didn't do it in our vows too.

We’re writing our own vow with coaching from our officiant. Last year we each wrote a draft and sent it to her. She then tweaked them a bit. We’re going to have another revision session so where down the road.

I like the idea of writing the vows with the officiant’s input and guidance.
