Start time too early??

Deidre, on March 20, 2018 at 5:21 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 28
Hello!

I wanted Ted to touch base with everyone to see if this is normal, or if you all think it’s a little early too. My wedding is at 4:30 on a Saturday. I have 6 bridesmaids, me, a MIL, and a FSIL getting hair/makeup done for the day. I know we need to have everything done by 2 for pictures, so the HMUA just told me that my start time is 8am... is that too early? I assumed that it would be more like 10am. Will it take that long? or is that weird? There will be more than one stylist there because of the amount of people.

Sounds right to me. My start time was 9:30am, for 5 people total, and pictures also started at 2pm for my 6pm ceremony.

This is why I'm not a fan of the bridal party spending the whole day together. If they book their own hair and makeup, everyone could have a great sleep, show up about 2 pm, have a glass of wine and get dressed together. Having people sit around doing nothing while others get their hair and makeup done, is not my idea of fun.

That sounds about right. My wedding started at 5:30pm and we started hair and makeup at 9am. And you have more people than I had getting services done, so yea, you will need that time. You don't want to feel rushed the morning of your wedding, it will only make you anxious!!

Those are really two different issues, though. If you're showing up at 2pm with hair and makeup done, you're still starting your own appointments a few hours before then, so I don't think it changes much in terms of start time.

They will most likely not be able to sleep in if going to a salon, they will have to start those appointments hours earlier. Plus, I do think it's fun there's usually music, and drinks and snacks.

That might be, if the expectation was that the bride scheduled the BM's to arrive at 2 hr intervals, and I got the last appointment, but that has never been my experience. All of the brides for whom I have been a bridesmaid, have expected the group to show up at the same time. If I book my own stylist, I can book a noon appointment and be there at 2pm easy peasy. That is a huge difference between being told to show up at 8 am.

My wedding started at 4:30pm and we needed to be ready by 2:30pm for pictures. We started at 9:00am and I thought it was early early as well but we ended pretty close. I had 8 girls for makeup including myself and 5 for hair and we finished right on time. It was two stylist and they did all the hair first and then did the makeup last. Time goes by so fast.

Heads up....if the bridesmaids are traveling to the location your getting ready at, give them a strict arrival time. I had to stall a little because some of my bridesmaids were running late.

Bring some music, champagne and enjoy every minute of it! Congrats

I think for a lot of people it’s really important to spend that morning with your girls, talking, drinking, snacking and getting ready together. I couldn’t imagine spending the morning of my wedding alone with just my hair and makeup artist and in the times I’ve been a bridesmaid I know the brides were glad we were there to spend time with her and calm her nerves. That time with my sisters and friends is really important to me, and some of my favorite photos from my photographers are of the girls spending time together and getting ready. I get your point of view though!

It’s about right as others have said. Definitely get some light snacks, water, and champagne/wine! I’ll probably order coffee, scones, and quiches from our local coffee roastery and cafe. I want to keep it light but make sure everyone has something to eat!

You can’t say you could book a noon appointment and be there at 2 easy peasy. With a salon, you have to fit into a stylist’s schedule, you have to factor in commute to wherever pictures are happening and you have to calculate how much time hair and makeup takes. For my wedding, I still would have needed to start by 10 at the latest. 1 hour hair, 1 hour makeup, 45 minute commute. And that’s without getting into a dress, getting shoes on, etc.

We have a 5:30 pm ceremony, with an 8 am getting ready start time. So that doesn't seem too crazy! We wanted lots of cushion time just in case. It'll be better to be ready early than to be on a time crunch and getting yourself in a tizzy! Take the time to enjoy with your bridal party. Smiley smile

We're starting at 8am for my 3:30 ceremony - would have had to be an hour earlier except I requested an extra stylist to cut it from 5 to 4 hours. Unfortunately that's how it is - I'm going to try and go second to last for hair, and last for makeup so mine is the freshest...sorry not sorry lol!

We are starting at 9am for 4 bridesmaids, 1 flower girl and the bride (me). Need to be done by 3:30 to get to venue for pictures by 4:15. Ceremony starts at 5pm. I'm having breakfast and lunch served so I dont see a reason why they would be upset about spending the day getting pampered.

Actually I can say whatever I want. My salon is 3 blocks away from where I live . They do hair and makeup at the same time so it doesn't take an hour for each. Our wedding venue is on an outdoor terrace of the hotel down the street.
So, yes, I can say that I would be ready to get dressed at 2 easy peasy.

Okay, so that works for your wedding and that one particular example, but to say that it would work that way across the board if all brides didn’t get ready with their BMs just isn’t true. None of the salons around me do hair and makeup at the same time. My regular salon doesn’t even have a MUA on their staff.
