Starting legal process of changing name

Are you just taking your future spouse’s last name or are you creating/taking a new last name? If you’re only taking your future spouse’s last name, you’ll just need to bring your marriage certificate to the social security office to change it after you’re married. If you’re taking/creating a new name, you’ll have to check your state’s laws for that as all states have different requirements for legal name change.

Check with your state, as there may be some statute of limitations, but I started the process about 2 months after my wedding. You do not need a lawyer, as the marriage last name change is different from having to petition the court. You start by changing your name with the Social Security Administration (there's a form and you need your marriage certificate), then you change your driver's license and passport (if you have one), then after you have your new license with your new name, you can change everything else.

Every state is different. Once I changed it on my marriage certificate and license it was legally changed. Then I did SS card by mail, went to the DMV, called cc companies and thats pretty much it. My name is legally changes almost everywhere except my business cards lol
