Still haven't Received our Marriage Certificate?

Lauren, on January 6, 2020 at 4:20 PM Posted in Married Life 0 8

My husband and I got married on September 13th and still haven't received our marriage certificate? I received a copy in the mail (that has a clear copy watermark across it) but when I took that to get my name changed at the social security office, they turned me away because it wasn't the actual document. So I've now been waiting over a month for this "official" document which has put my name change on hold, since this is the first step. We are now approaching 4 months after this was done (at the courthouse).

Can anyone help me figure out where I am right now in this process and what's going on? Should I be contacting someone, waiting it out, or do I have what I need? HELP!

I had to go to city hall and purchase one. Had you paid to get an official one when you applied for your license?

It depends on your state. In my state, they do not automatically mail it out. You have to pay them per copy, so we physically went to the county clerk's and bought 2 copies.

Like previous posters said, it depends on where you are located. I’m in Southern California and we had to pay a $100 fee for the marriage license and then when it’s recorded we have to physically go in and pick up the real one and pay another $15 for one 🙄

It may depend on your state, but I had to go to our register to deeds office and purchase an official copy.

Okay same. I had my husband look into it and it looks like we have to go in. Ugh. Wish I would have realized that like...months ago!
    Thanks for your help!

    Hey newly weds,
In 2022, For Los Angeles Ca - it is taking 6-8 weeks upon receipt. I'd probably suggest once the 45th day has hit, on that day try to make an appointment online for in person. Because, like the post says you cannot do anything without the certified copy to legally change your name.

Best wishes to your beautiful marriage everyone🥂. -S

How hard is the whole process? I've seen bits and pieces of what has to be changed. Our drivers license, social security, bank accounts, loans and credit cards.
