Stoneware vs Porcelain vs Bone China

Della, on August 10, 2014 at 5:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

Recently my parents offered to buy us everyday china as an engagement present. We are really excited about this because we have 3 inherited sets that don't match and don't fit our entertaining needs. We don't have more than four plates that match and one set that gets burning hot when we put it in the microwave. When we started looking we quickly got overwhelmed because of all the different materials! We are just looking for everyday sets that we can microwave and throw in the dishwasher. Does anyone have suggestions as to materials?

Bone china does not go in the dishwasher nor the microwave. I don't know about the others.

Stoneware can go into the microwave & dishwasher -- but it weighs a ton! Try lifting a dozen dinner plates into a high cabinet! Also, it can chip and craze and break.

We bought stoneware and I kind of wish we had bought Corelle for every day use.

We have bone china from Macy's and it can (and does) go in the microwave and dishwasher. That's why we bought it. It's great for everyday and very durable. We looked at stoneware but it was sooooo heavy and the guy at Macy's advised us it would break/chip really easily.

I would check each type of bone china, then, because mine cannot go in their dishwasher and microwave.

I had the same thoughts before registering. Stone ware will give you that SOUNDS when the fork runs against it. We did porcelain and we have gotten one of three sets so far. If you're not careful, you get the sound, but 95% of the time it's fine.

When we chose what type to register for we met with a registry specialist at Bed Bath and Beyobd and they were able to answer all our questions and even set up place settings for us, so we could see the whole look together before deciding on what we wanted. That might make it a little easier Smiley winking

This is going to sound crazy haha, but we're not registering for any sort of china because we inherited my grandma's set when she passed away a few years ago. It's Mikasa bone china from 1969 (in a patten I honestly could never replace, I love it so much) and we have every.single.piece intact, not a single chip. My dad ate off of these when he was growing up, I ate off these when I was growing up, and they've been cleaned in the dishwasher since dishwashers have existed (slight exaggeration).

I registered for more white Corelle just like I have. I have had the stoneware and I hated it. Used it until I replaced it with Corelle, We had that growing up and it is very durable. I also have plastic melamine set from Longaberger baskets and I use that in a pinch, its more like picnic plates and not microwave safe. We are not fine china kinda people at all.
