Strapless dresses and tan lines!

Kelly, on July 1, 2022 at 1:09 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 20
How are ladies wearing strapless dresses managing to avoid tanlines all summer? I get a framer tan and my neck line walking the dog even with sunscreen. It’s getting too hot to wear long sleeves too. More importantly, my burn /tan line from March in Hawaii is still very obvious. Bathing suit straps on my back and shoulders! So even if I wanted to put on sunscreen and wear a strapless dress I’m afraid it will darken the tan line area. For reference, Im pale and don’t make a habit of hanging in the sun but had hoped for a slight tan before the wedding. However, the fact that I still have lines from March makes that impossible. I hope they go away by October. Any advice on how to handle hot summer and avoid making my lasting lines worse?

If tanning naked/top less is not an option try a tube top. Also I've heard of plenty of brides doing a self tanner to even out their tone.

Also I'm still rocking my tan/burn lines from last August 😂

I also get a farmers tan incredibly easy. I’ll be wearing a little lace jacket with my strapless dress (very self conscious of my arms) but I won’t be wearing it the entire time so I’ll be going to a tanning place for them to give me a good spray tan the week before

I have the same issue!! I am wearing sunscreen ALL the time, but I think the tan lines are inevitable for me. I tried to find a swimsuit with a simile neck and back line as my dress to help as much as possible. I definitely don’t have the answer - hoping someone else can give some good advice! Good luck!

Jacket is a smart idea. It will be too hot for me to wear one until after the ceremony. I’m so nervous about spray tanning! I have never done it and it’s a destination wedding so I can’t try a local place before hand. Have you done it before? I am worried I’ll look orange or it will come off on dress or look odd on elbows etc.

I get tan lines just from walking to my car from a store, lol no mater what I do, I'm going to get tan lines and I know there is no way of avoiding it just based on how my skin takes in the sun (my great grandparents are from southern Italy so I hold a tan and tan dark regardless of sunscreen)

My plan is to get a spray tan to even myself out, I have one scheduled for the end of this month prior to my bridal shower to test it out, but I explained what I wanted to the shop owner of the tanning salon I'm going to and she assured me she could get it done, I'm going with a custom color hand spray tan, so she can focus on the parts I need the coverage, instead of just getting into a booth that's going to tan my whole body the same.

Haha no way! Who would think tan lines would last this long. I thought nothing of it while on vacation. Well, maybe I’ll try that. Do you mean a lotion??

I was concerned about tan lines too! I wore 50 spf sunblock every time I went for a walk and was very diligent.

You could try wearing different necklines every time you walk your dog. A tank top, a racerback, tshirt, tube top, halter to avoid getting the same tan line? With sunblock of course.

You could also invest in a large floppy wide brim hat that could help with the back of the neck tan and then you can bring it on a honeymoon trip?

Interesting. I can certainly try a spray tan out and see if it covers up the current leftover burn lines that I have for my bathing suit straps. I guess I just would prefer to try a place that’s near the wedding because that’s where I’m going to have to go. I guess I’ve read that you should try the place out before using a specific business and I can’t really do that. We’re leaving about a week before our wedding so I guess I could try to get one here and hope that it lasts I just don’t wanna have it start peeling off Or whatever it does. The thing is is I could put on some sunscreen and a strapless dress and go get a little color on my back porch evenly but my concern is that it’s going to make my current bathing suit burn mark lines from March darker maybe I’m wrong about that? For some reason I keep thinking it will make them worse lol

I can definitely try wearing different tops and I’m trying to wear like a really light shirt that has like sun protection it just gets so hot wearing it. Hat is definitely a good idea. I hate putting sunscreen on all over my upper body when I just really usually only put it on my face for the dog walk. Certainly if I’m putting on a bathing suit I put it all over my upper body. I was just asking someone else about tanning with a strapless dress on and sunscreen if it would make my current Tanlines worse that are left over from March. I can’t figure it out? I feel like it would emphasize them?

I can understand how the destination wedding interferes, you could reach out to a local tanning salon and see what the suggest if you go that route.

Everybody's body tans differently, so it's hard to give advice on how your body will hold a tan/burn, I usually burn the first time I go out in the sun, but it turns tan a day or two later, and then the rest of the summer I'm just getting darker and darker.

You're best option is probably to switch up what style tops you're wearing out everytime you go in the sun, so a different part of your skin is showing every time, the only concern with that is you could end up with a bunch of different tan lines instead of just one. I would suggest a tube top if your dress is just strapless! Mines, low back and low v in the front so that wouldn't work for me, but if your dress is just strapless with a standard back a tube top would be suggested.

Also, if you wear a smartwatch or fitness tracker, I would suggest putting it on your ankle, if you want to track your walks or activity out in the sun, that way if you do get a tan line from it, it's somewhere easily hidden, my watch line is the WORST tan line I have.

Try putting a 50spf on your tanned parts and a 15spf on the parts that are not tan and see if you can even out?

I got burned a few weeks ago and have been applying sunblock normally and the line is still there but it should fade with time. Good luck!

I actually haven’t! Luckily I’m getting married in October so I can wear a light jacket. We actually have a shoot with our wedding photographer in two weeks and I’m going to go get one and try it out. I think do a trial run or two depending on when your wedding is and find the shade you like. I already have a tanner skin tone so I know I don’t have to go too hard lol. If you take the proper steps beforehand, exfoliate etc and give enough days before wedding day it shouldn’t streak and even if it does you can get it dry cleaned

What if you buy a couple strapless tops, and a strapless bathing suit? When you’re walking your dog, you can wear one of them (even strapless swimsuit and shorts) & it may be a little tricky, but you could put spf 50 on the tan areas and 15 on the whiter areas. I know 15 doesn’t offer as much protection, but maybe it’ll be fine for 30 minute walks & allow you to get some color?

My dress has a lower back, so I ordered a new swimsuit to avoid tan lines as well. On vacation this week, I wore my suit with shorts or a skirt a few times. Granted I didn’t get much color because of SPF, but still want to avoid any weird tan lines for our wedding on the 23 Smiley smile

I’ll try using the Two different SPfs. Maybe that will work. A strapless bathing suit is probably a better idea otherwise I’ll have to wear a swim shirt.

I am in the same boat and have been wearing a large rimmed hat along with the sunblock and it’s helped a lot!

If spray tans are an issue, you could try self-tanner. You could experiment with whether it evens out your tan lines or if you'd need an extra layer on the less tan areas as well.
