Strawberry Jam Favors: How many, what size?

Sara, on May 16, 2015 at 11:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

So, it's a bit last minute, but my mom and I are thinking about putting together strawberry preserves as favors. Strawberries are in season and I can get them locally, and I think it will tie in well with everything else we're doing. We're going to do small batch tomorrow to see how it turns out, and if it's worth the effort. My question, is what size jar should I use, and how many? 2 oz, 4 oz, or 8 oz jars? 1 per guest or 1 per household, or something in between?

I have about 100 guests, so if I do 75 [4] oz jars, will that be enough? I'm thinking most people will only grab one per couple, and some won't grab them at all, so 75 is probably enough? Thoughts?

I'm also doing jam favors (strawberry or peach)...I'm using 4oz jars. Since I plan to put the jams on my "sweets table"--I'm only doing half of my guest size. Are the jam favors the only favors that you're giving your guests? If yes--I would do one per person (100). Unless if you plan to put it on a dessert/sweets table and people have a variety of what they want then 75 would be enough.

Idk if price is a concern but you could look for baby food jars and paint the tops. I put a want ad on some Facebook yards ale group and had a few mins that far them to me for free!

I think 4 oz jars is perfect, and I agree that not everyone will take one, but I wouldn't want someone to not get one. You can use the extras or give them away as gifts or vendor thank yous, so I would just make 100 and call it a day. Sounds delicious and I would love this as a favor!

Yes like the other girls said, if you are using for your favors, then do one for everyone! This sounds like a yummy favor!

I think when food is the favor, each guest is more likely to take one. Especially when it's something homemade. I went to a wedding with my fiancé where they gave homemade snacks out as favors and we were happy we each got one for ourselves.

I'd make one for each guest. 4oz jars seem the most ideal to me. You could have them do extra duty and make them the escort cards as well?

Sooo cute, i would do 100. I am doing teacups & saucer with a plant in it for shower, and making extras for the servers to take one home. I am giving a 20% tip upfront so this is just a little thank you. If you have extras left the servers will love it, I put my self threw school serving at weddings, and loved the little extras the brides did for us.

Thanks ladies! One for one it is. I didn't even think about giving one to the vendors and staff, that's a great idea.

If you use the really small jars, they will cost more. But, if you have to fill half-pint jars, it will cost more in strawberries and sugar.

I'm a Master Food Preserver - you do know how to can correctly, yes? And don't use used baby food jars - no, no, no. Not for preserved foods, you have to do it exactly right so you don't kill anyone....seriously.

How about putting a kraft tag on the top and making them the escort cards as well?

    Best wishes.

@Monique, thanks for the advice! I've never canned before today, but I did do my research and followed the correct process. I did a small batch today as a trial run, and within minutes of taking them out of the water bath, heard very satisfying pops, so I think I did it right. I'm letting them rest overnight and will sample one tomorrow. I do like the idea of kraft labels, I'm still deciding on presentation but I like the idea of favors as escort cards. Thanks everyone!
