Stressing out about IKEA Tolsby frame (DIY project) help?!

MrsPadilla2B, on November 11, 2016 at 11:58 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 9

Hey everyone,

So FH and I went to buy a bunch of frames for the wedding and we were/are still using it for the reception. I bought 17 Tolsby frames for the centerpiece. We bought spray paint (Rust-Oleum gold metallic) and we spray painted 4 of them, and they turned out jacked up. we tried 2 of them disassembled and waited for it to dry, and then we would paint the other side. we tried the other 2 assembled. All the paint came out uneven and really thick. What methods do you use to spray paint your frames? I need help because I want them to be perfect, but I've seen some pics of painted ones and they still had that problem. Or am I being too hard on myself?

You probably held the CAN too close to the frames. Hold it about a foot back and just do a thin layer, wait for it to dry and then do another layer, repeat until ideal coverage is achieved

You can see the inner part where it's streaky and thick and there's still a spot of white, but if we try to spray paint it again it gets too thick and goopy

It looks like you're spraying too close. Metallic paint can take several coats to get opaque, and needs to dry completely between coats or it will pool and hoop up like that.

This might be a stupid question but we're you holding the pray paint far enough away as directed? Along with doing light coats and letting it dry in between?

Also is the spray paint you used meant for that material?

Yes, I guess we painted it too close because it's dark outside and we did it under the gazebo in the backyard where the light was dull and I didn't want to mess up my mom's table. So I guess the better method would be to do it in daylight and on the floor (covered with newspapers of course) and then spray from far away.

Spray paint can be tricky. You definitely need to cover the space under it because to do it correctly, you will make a mess. Spray in short bursts back and forth, about 8-10 inches away from object. It's also helpful to "rough up" the surface of the object a bit to help the paint adhere more evenly. I'm guessing they are plastic. If so, a new brillow pad is rough enough to do the trick.

This is salvagable. Take a brillow pad or light sand paper over what you've already painted. Then do a light coat over it, holding can farther away.

I did this exactly same thing with the same spray paint. Definitely do it in daylight haha and make sure the can is held far enough away. Ours still didn't come out perfect, so go into it knowing you can't be a total perfectionist, but you can definitely get it to be a bit more even.
