Student photographers vs. professional

Megan, on June 30, 2020 at 3:21 PM Posted in Planning 1 16

Pros and cons to what people prefer. Considering a student, but I don’t know what to look for before hiring a student photographer. Also a professional would be easy for me to decide.

I had a student photographer take my graduation photos and her work was just so dam nice and I only paid her $50 in total aha

Take a look at their portfolios and if you aren’t sure exactly then maybe try them out for an engagement shoot or bridal portraits beforehand

I would choose a professional on this day but I will say look at their portfolio and make sure you like their work...that is for any photographer. Here is a website that was super helpful for me.

I agree with pp and check out their portfolio. Also if they have done weddings before maybe ask if they have reviews or references from past couples. This might be hard due to the fact they are a student and may just give you positive reviews since they don't have a site set up for reviews. However, I think it can't hurt to ask.

For wedding photos, I highly recommend hiring a professional. These are likely the most important photos of your life. I wouldn’t want to leave them in the hands of a student.

I went with a professional but one of my best friends had a student do hers for a huge price difference. Looking at my friends pictures they look absolutely stunning, you would never know it was a student. I think you should just request to see a portfolio..if they look good and aren't as expensive go for it!

Yeah. I think I am headed that way. It’s so hard to find someone affordable that we like in The valley of LA. Either that, or I got worn out from picking the venue. Haha!

I completely understand. Photography is expensive! It’s worth it though! Maybe check a little outside of your area and see if you can find anyone cheaper. Many photographers are willing to travel.

Absolutely nothing wrong with hiring a student photographer. You would be surprised at how nice the photos can turn out. Just make sure you really communicate with them what you are looking for. Also, try to look at their examples. Do they have experience with event photography?

You can always hire a student to do your engagement photos just to see how they do and what their style is.

I realize PP need experience, and PP sometimes can only afford Cheap Photography. However I don’t think a wedding day is the day to experiment with that. Coming from a former Wedding Photographer, there are ways for students to get experience by photographing other subjects, working as an assistant or second shooter for a Pro Photographer. Honestly I would want someone who is seasoned and has experience with the different scenarios that weddings present. There’s a lot that goes into a wedding than just “good pictures.” There are different lighting (or non-lighting) scenarios that are a challenge. Also do they have a second or a backup photographer? How will they ensure your photos are protected (backed up properly for liability if there is an issue with a faulty memory card, etc.)? It’s more than just a good portfolio, and I would keep that in mind as you search for the right photographer. Plus I am a strong advocate of paying people what they’re worth. I value every professional’s time, and there’s more time that goes into a wedding than just the wedding day for most of your vendors, work they’re doing prior and afterwards.

I agree with everyone that said professional. You really can't redo your wedding pictures. Smiley smile
