Stumped on Groom Attire

Paige, on April 16, 2021 at 1:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 15

My future spouse has been fairly hands-off for the wedding planning and that's been fine but the one thing that I've been trying to get them to help me out on is to pick out their wedding outfit. They are non-binary and tend to have a bit more out of the box thinking when it comes to fashion which is totally cool with me, but they also have a hard time with making decisions so that means that we really haven't made any progress in terms of figuring out a wedding outfit for them. What I know so far is that they definitely DON'T want a suit and that they have the idea of a wedding cape in their head. I've show them a few options for wedding capes (and could probably sew a decent one in a pinch) but they haven't been excited about anything I've shown them so far. My questions are: 1. how long should I give them to try to find something on their own and does anyone have any cool references for wedding capes for masculine body types? Trying to lean away from anything too high fantasy. I've attached a picture of the only reference that they gave me haha. I'm worried that we will get to the wedding date and they will just pull something out of the closet...

What types of outfits does your FS usually wear? Are there specific clothing items that they wear on special occasions? Perhaps instead of a suit, they could try a jumpsuit. Could something like this interest them?I know you said not costumy, but I think with the right outfit, it could make for a nice look. Yourdressmaker.com

The Dolce & Gabbana is my favorite. I love the deep blue and I’m a sucker for velvet.

I would say that they typically dress in a comfortable style, not necessarily leaning either feminine or masculine. Lots of tight jeans, short shorts, loose tank tops, lots of graphic/art tees and tank tops. Something like this could work, although I'm guessing they will want something that is more flowy and open/comfortable. I'm pretty open to any suggestions at this point. Smiley smile

I’m happy you see some options they may like. Try searching for cloaks instead of capes it’ll show a broader selection!

That purple suit/cape combo gives me Renaissance Vampire vibes and I am HERE FOR IT!!

OP, I really like the kind of chain front of the 3rd cape in your reference image. Are there any references your FS could draw from to help give you ideas, like Jon Snow's or Dr. Strange's cape? If they have a hard time making decisions, I'd give them a bit more time to figure it out. If the wedding is in September, maybe look to have the decision made by mid-late July. Making or buying a cap won't take nearly as much planning time as a wedding dress would, but you also don't want to leave it to the very last minute and have that extra time crunch stress.

Thank you for all the suggestions! This really got my creative juices flowing and I found a free pattern and I just showed my partner and they were on board! Now lets see if I can actually sew this thing! Smiley tongue

As for the not being excited, cut them some slack. I wasn’t excited for dress shopping at all until I got there. As someone who has never pictured their wedding day and dreamed of it their whole life, it was hard to get excited until I was in the moment trying on dresses. Maybe trying capes on will get them excited!!

Have fun sewing! I'm glad you found something your parter also likes. I'm sure the fact you are making it will only make it more special.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I really think this is your FS's job to figure out, especially if your FS is being picky. I get that doesn't really help your question, but I think each member of the wedding couple is responsible for their own outfit choices and neither dictating the other person's choice nor foisting off the work of picking an outfit is fair.
