Submerged flower centerpieces-- can fake/silk flowers be used??

BPwedding, on October 7, 2013 at 10:06 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

My fiancé and I LOVE the look of submerged flowers in the tall cylinder vases. We want to make our own but with DIY, we would want to use fake flowers because of cost, etc. Has anyone done this before? I've done some research and some people and sites said that silk flowers wouldn't work or look right. Any insight would be wonderful!

I've read that you can, haven't seen it done in practice. I plan on getting a flower from the dollar store and putting it in a clear drinking glass to see what happens. I like the look too and this would be much more budget friendly!

I have seen plastic or silk orchids in a tall vase filled with water, they looked real. I never would have known if the bride didn't tell me. She said she purchase the orchids from Ikea

I made centerpieces for my SIL's wedding with fake flowers. There were those gem/rock things in the bottom of the vase. The stems of the fake flowers stuck down into the rocks. And water was filled to nearly the top with a floating candle on top. It definitely can be done with fake flowers.

I don't think you should use cheap fake flowers, but try one and let it sit around for as long as you would make them in advance and see how they look to you.

This was the look I wanted as well for our wedding. But after we got started looking at the costs, we realized that it wasn't the flowers that were adding to the expense, but rather the cost of the vases. We ended up deciding on one large cylinder vase (that I got 50% off each week at AC moore) and we are using real orchids in that vase. We found cutting down the cost of the vase helped to make it possible to have real flowers!

You can use fake flowers, but since you don't need lots of flowers, maybe fresh flowers can be even cheaper than fake.

Make sure you test the flowers in water first. With some fake flowers, any color will seep and color the water.

We did submerged orchids as centrepieces for our wedding but instead of renting the vases from the florist, we went to the dollar store and brought in our own (our florist graciously let us do that to save money). The smaller ones were $1.25 and the larger cylinder ones were $2.50.

We are using a silk rose that was bought from Hobby Lobby and attached a weight to it so that it will not float to the top. I also bought cylinder vases from the dollar store and floating candles off of Amazon. We did experiment and put the centerpiece together and it looked beautiful! the only issue is that the flower did end up dying the water - but it was our wedding color and blended with the tablecloth Smiley winking You couldn't really tell. My suggestion would be to find a flower you like and test it and see what happens.

We're using real ones, I have someone actually making them for me for each table... I had added up the cost of doing my own vs a girl that I had seen do them...

around $40 she's doing 4 different vases, with different flowers in them (orchid, calla, larkspur and snapdragon) and putting a square vase on the bottom and including the votives around it for each table. I'm just supplying some extra gems to sprinkle around them.

Thanks everyone.. you all have eased my mind a little! Ideally, we would want a florist to take care of all this for us but we chose to spend more (and I mean MUCH more) than we planned on our venue so we have to cut back in other areas. What is the set up process for using real flowers? I feel like there would be a lot of last minute prep work... buying, cutting, and setting up...

@Lynzey U. Yours are beautiful... you did those on our own, or did you have a florist? If I could do that on my own, I would!

@Rebecca, what was the $40 for,... each table? Vase set up?

Yeah that was for each table with everything.... Before I went with her I did talk to my florist and she was willing to just charge me for the flowers and set them up for me... but with the other girl it was just easier (less of a hassle for me)...

You can always see if you can rent the vases, then get the flowers, (something to weigh them down) and then the water...

Hi I found 3 vase plus the mirror and one light for each light for 15 dollars.

    I'm buying flowers from Costco.

Does anybody know if I use lily and tulips I can make a day or two before the wedding and just have the water on the bottom and add full jar water on the day of the wedding. I don't want to rush on my wedding day or the flowers to die.

Did the real flowers end up floating? Or are they weighed down somehow?
