Submersible Fake Flowers for Aisle

Jess & Sean, on January 5, 2014 at 5:27 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 9

Thanks for any help in advance!

For my wedding aisles, I am looking to do sets of three cylinder vases filled with water, floating candles, and submersible flowers. My colors are pink and white, sod I am mainly thinking of calla lilies & white/pink orchids.

Although I do have a florist, I don't want to use real flowers, as I'm going to have too much to do on the day of my wedding to DIY these the morning of. I was hoping to use fake flowers & have them ready to go, and then have my wedding coordinator add the water and floating candles the day of my ceremony and reception.

First, have any brides done this? Second of all, where is a good place to get cheap silk flowers? I would need to fill 36 vases (12 7 inch, 12 9 inch, 12 10.5 inch) & don't want to cheapen the look of my ceremony.

Any tips & tricks are also welcome!

Just a side note...If you have a florist, she would be in charge of putting something like this together for you if you purchased the flowers from her. (You mentioned you would have too much to DIY..) You shouldn't have to be DIYing anything on your wedding day if you have a coordinator and a florist.

Yes kelsey, but I think there would be an enormous markup for my florist putting together these arrangements for me with real orchids and callas, versus me being able to DIY them before with my own (fake) flowers, and my own vases and materials.

I was hoping to only rely on the coordinator to add water and float the candles, while I would be setting them up in advance.

I am doing this for half of my centerpieces. I got the fake flowers from Walmart and I love how they look underwater. With it lining the aisle I would only worry someone might accidentally kick them over.

My sister did something like this for her wedding, it turned out beautifully. She ended up purchasing white calla lillies from a Hobby Lobby (and extras at Michaels, AC Moore) she found that the flowers themselves were floating and not sinking so she bought some inexpensive "pie beads" on Amazon (you put them in a pie crust to bake it without filling) and super glued them to the bottom of the flowers to make them sink. Super easy!

Yep, they float until theyre water logged, you can even put a bit of the hot glue inside or on the bottom of each flower, the weight of the glue itself may be enough

Orchids stay in really good shape for quite some time...especially if they have water. I'd buy just a stem and test it out and see how long they keep for. We had all our vases brought back and stuck in our garage while we were on our HM and even without water, I was pretty surprised that they weren't completely dead after 2 weeks. There was another set of orchids in a vase with water leftover (short vase vs submerged) and they were still pretty much alive too.

I'm doing something similar for my centerpieces, and I am using preserved flowers. I bet in water they will look the same as real.

Yuck! They add fake color? I guess makes sense.
