Subtle video game theme wedding

Bridina, on December 30, 2013 at 3:03 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

Don't get me wrong- the fiance and I are both VERY in to gaming (it's how we met!), but we also have a lot of traditional family coming. We wanted to avoid the inevitable drama of a full blown gamer themed wedding while giving us (and all our nerdy friends) a chuckle. Almost an inside joke theme. The big day is April 19th and I am looking for some other ideas of course, but here's where we started.

We based the colors on the color pallet of the water world of Mario. Sounds confusing, but here's the palette

The dresses and are the Green (clover), Pink (Watermelon, only because they discontinued Periwinkle which would have been PERFECT, and this is more of a wine red then pink) and silver (Mercury, and Silvergoes with anything.) Guys in matching vests, no jackets... and the FUN begins! I'll continue with the post in the comments because I'm out of room, but welcome your ideas on gamer subtlety!

    Subtle inclusion #1-

    The guys ties: http://www.zazzle.com/ps_button_tie-151040713801227086

They look black and silver from a distance- but up close is where the fun begins Smiley smile

#2- My mom wanted to make our cake, but we are at a zoo and she can't without liability insurance. So we are going to go with cupcakes. BUT they are letting her decorate a big fancy fake cake (styrofoam) with a real top layer for us to take home Smiley smile I've asked her to write in icing somewhere on the cake "The cake is a lie" (portal reference)

#3- I found these at Micheal's for a dollar. I bought 5 of them, and am painting them watermelon. They look just like the little heart containers from classic fight games... or zelda. They will be on the head table holding the 4 BM bouquets + 1 mine in the middle

We are kind of just adding small jabs of gaming where we can. We are also huge gamers so we wanted to do an "achievement unlocked" sign as our cake topper and I plan to get something gamer-ish inscribed inside his ring. Small stuff like that.

Your color pallet is very fun!

OMG I love that one! Haven't picked one of those out yet Smiley smile Kind of matches our colors too!

#4 - if you take a shoebox, unfold it and then refold it inside out (so all the designs and stuff are inside), then use brown and black temper paint- you can create the look of an old chest ala Zelda. I used them for pirates chests for Halloween, but here it will be the card box.

Those are all of the ones I've come up with so far, but I'd love to hear more ideas Smiley smile I've been kicking around a couple other ideas, but they border on the blatant gamer! like this http://img0.etsystatic.com/021/1/8222668/il_570xN.494532424_o5sx.jpg but on a background that looks like a gameboy. Nothing wrong with that! But I've found that trying to hide little game references all over has become a lot of fun!

I'll post pictures of things I come up with as they are made, and please feel free to share your subtle and not-so-subtle gamer-themed wedding ideas!

What if instead of numbers for tables you did "lands" in your favorite video game or even just your favorite video game names?

I love the Mario cupcakes and toppers Smiley smile we cosplayed as Mario and Peach at a convention in Detroit!

@Lisa- I'd thought about something similar... I was thinking of doing little themes of our favorite games, each table a different game or level from a game (since the water level is VERY specific). To keep it simple I was thinking about just doing a vase and bouquet (of artificial flowers) in the color pallet and add a little charm or quote from the game in question. When I started that path though, it became complicated fast though!
