Suburged carnation flower centerpieces

Sarah, on October 15, 2015 at 2:30 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 19

Hi all, I just wanted to see if anyone out there has used the single submerged flower look with carnations? I'm picking this flower because it is overall cheaper than most (and I don't want roses). But maybe there is a reason I can't find any good pictures on Google images? Perhaps these flowers wilt if they are submerged in water? Any other (low cost) ideas on how to use this flower? Thanks!

I suggest just about anything but a carnation..... I'm not a big flower person at all, but carnations are just SO cheap. If it's going to be submerged, I'd use a beautiful silk flower. Or personally I'd rather see a floating candle rather than a carnation in water... Just my opinion! Sounds like you're being practical, which is great!

I have heard that most people use silk flowers for submerged flowers just so they do maintain their shape better.

If you are going for submerged, I'd follow the girls suggestions and go with fake flowers. Also, carnations were somehow always related to grave flowers in my family so I could never use them for a wedding, even if they are pretty.

Because everyone hates carnations. And their format isn't really conducive to the container. ;-)

There are some many things you can do with carnations. When you bunch a lot of them together they look so soft and ruffly.

I almost used roses then I found a place that sold roses for 19.84 for 25! carnations were 10.95 for a dozen. I get more roses and they look more expensive but they are cheaper. You might want to look around.

I mostly hate carnations. But my dear mother, a retired wedding florist herself, is going to order some mini carns as filler for the awesome heart wreath she's going to make for us (like my avatar pic.) Mini carns are so much better than the big, clunky, funeral-y ones.

But I'm making her promise to use very few. And only in the wreath. Not in centerpieces. USE ALL THE ROSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's true Care; if you use 40 million of them, they're really pretty, especially the deep purple ones. But I don't see them as a submerged thing. I'd do dendrobium orchids (sp?)

Btw its not the price of, I just don't want roses. It's what's my mom used (my dad brings them home every year on their anniversary) and I kinda just want my own (inexpensive) flower

AW2B can you hot glue the flowers to the bottom of the vase? Sarah, if you use silk flowers, there might be other cheap options.

AW2B there is this water looking gel stuff that you could try, you put the mix of the gel in the bottom and the put your flower in and the it gets hard, it would anchor the flower down but you wouldn't be able to get them out if you were going to try and sell everything afterwards.

Hi Sarah, we are doing submerged carnations for your centerpiece a. 2 carnations, staggered in height, in each case with a floating candle on top.

Here is a mock up we did with only one flower.

I'm having something very similar but my florist is doing it for me. She said she could use oasis to hold the flowers in place then cover it so it can't be seen with either other flowers or a substance such as a gel, sand or glass beads. I imagine you could also use florists wire or wired ribbon to secure the flowers.

My florist said to NOT use florist tape to hold the flower under or together. We are using weights and wire. We will attach them to the flowers and then cover the weights with glass beads, to hide the weights.

If you like carnations, use them. I did. I like the spicy scent of them.

I was wanting to do a submerged centerpiece using orchids but they were very expensive and even silk flowers tend to be just as much. I tried gladiolus (they float so I had to anchor them with fishing wire and weight) and they looked beautiful! Carnation would be pretty if they were in a shallow vase since they don't have blooms on their stem.
