Suits for Groom and Groomsmen - Rent and Buy Combo?

Katharine, on February 6, 2022 at 9:22 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 11

Both my fiance (groom) and myself (bride) are absolutely clueless about men's fashion. I am leaning towards everyone buying, because I heard renting never really fits just right, and I want him to look and feel his best on our wedding day. However, it is quite expensive to buy - we are completely fine with spending for him, but I just can't bring myself to ask our groomsmen and fathers to purchase anything over $400. I am very cost conscious when it comes to asking our bridal party to pay high costs, but I am fine with us investing in a nice suit that he can reuse.

I really am leaning towards my fiance getting a custom suit - I'd prefer him to have guidance throughout the measurement and options selection process. Is there anywhere who offers both the option to buy and rent the exact same suit? Or offers custom suit purchases for the groom, but has matching less expensive options for the remaining bridal party? Or even a place that will work with us to determine what will match? I don't care - and it's actually preferable - if we can offer our groomsmen and fathers the option to rent for a lower cost, or buy the exact same suit for a little more money.

On the top of our list currently is SuitShop (moderate price to buy) and Indochino (higher cost, custom). We are so stumped - any advice or sharing your experience is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

We went with the rent option after looking at the cost to buy. Does your FH ever plan on wearing the suit again? Usually the groom gets fitting 2 weeks prior the wedding date. Just make sure everything is writing down correctly when the order is being placed. All the groomsmen looked great on our day. The only issue is someone ended up with a blue rest and not burgundy and so they switch with the best man. It all worked out fine.

My fiancé and I literally went through this yesterday 😊 He is going to have a custom tux made. It’s practical for him because we will have black tie events to attend in the future. It’s not a cheap option. He’s going to have his guys just rent tuxes. They generally fit just fine, and it won’t look bad at all. If anything, the groom will stand out a little bit. We went to Mens Wearhouse, FYI. Lots of nice options there.

Do you mind me asking the cost of his suit and the groomsmens’ rentals? We have an appointment at men’s wearhouse next week and I’ve been stressing about this exact situation! I’m thinking the groom with buy and groomsmen will rent, but want to know prices before I decide.

I think it varies between suits and tuxes a little, but probably similar. To have something custom, it’s $400+. It’s going to depend on the fabrics you choose. And that’s just for the suit…you will still need to buy the shirt, ties and shoes. The tux rentals will be around $230 each. Also, my fiancé was just in a wedding a few months ago and rented a tux from MW and it fit terrific.

That’s super helpful! Thank you! Just like you, we don’t mind spending more for his suit since he could use a new one and we have many weddings coming up. I just can’t justify having the groomsmen paying over $400 on suits for our wedding.

My fiancé ordered a custom tux from Indochino, as he purchased a custom suit from there for a wedding we were both in last year (I highly recommend signing up for emails if you haven’t already as he was able to get a great deal online). My dad bought his and my fiancé’s groomsmen bought/will buy their suits from Men’s Warehouse (and they can be altered in-house). My dad’s dark navy blue suit was $299, and alterations were about $60. He was able to pick it up with just a few days. The groomsmen are wearing black suits, but they aren’t wearing the exact same style (especially as some are out of state). They will, however, have matching bow ties (or ties), pocket squares, and boutonnieres. Most of the black suits we looked at were $250-300 or closer to $400, if a vest was included.

And, I should mention, we decided on buying suits verses renting tuxes (despite having a black-tie optional wedding) as they could then wear their suits for future events (and not feel like they wasted their money). My brother and his groomsmen rented a few years ago, and he’s mentioned several times he wished we would have just bought it (as he could have reworn it to so many weddings since then). My dad rented then too, and he said he didn’t like the fit and wished he just bought a suit instead. With that being said, he was definitely excited when I said let’s go shopping for your suit. He had a great experience at Men’s Warehouse, and wants to go shopping with me for a new office wardrobe now. I highly recommend going during the week day though, not during peak hours, as you’ll have more time to look/try-on and have more personalized attention during alterations. My dad and I went on a Friday morning, and no one was there. My fiancé and I went the following Saturday afternoon (to look at bow ties and pocket squares) and it was extremely packed (and, so much so, we could barely look around the store).

My fiance did not own a single suit or even a suit jacket so he decided to buy. His Best Man went with him to Jos A. Bank and the two of them both had a great experience, with the staff as well as what they ended up buying. Because of my fiance's proportions, the only option was to get a custom suit. He chose some of the pricier options including to go for a 3 piece instead of just a jacket and pants. It cost over $600 dollars but he is happy and confident where normally he is self-conscious about his appearance. For us, buying was the right choice.

His Best Man found a suit jacket in dark navy (our wedding color) with a black lapel. It was on sale and he bought it for less than $100. He is wearing black slacks, a white collared shirt, and a black bow tie that he already owns. If you independently ask your groomsmen what they already own and how much they can afford to contribute then that might help you decide what to do.

I second Men's Warehouse. My FH bought a suit there, which the salesperson also said is a rental option. But there is no rule that the other men have to match your husband!

We went with Jim's Formal Wear because they were the most size-inclusive place we could find. They have a website, but you can also go through a local bridal shop and that's what we did. His suit was around $500 with a coat, vest, and pants. The rentals will be $160 for everything but shoes and socks.

How was your experience with Jim's Formal Wear? They have mixed reviews on various websites.
