Sunscreen and makeup?

Elaine, on June 13, 2018 at 7:58 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 12
My wedding will be inside/outside, mostly in the shade when outdoors, but photos and some of cocktail hour will likely be in the sun, and it will probably be in the 80s. I have super sensitive skin and am prone to burning so I want to avoid being a lobster in my photos haha! Not sure when to apply sunscreen so I don’t get roasted...if I put it on in the morning when I’m getting ready, will its efficacy wear off by afternoon? Should I wait to apply until right before I have to leave the hotel and go out in the summer sun? Not sure if sunscreen is more effective if I put it on underneath or on top of my makeup or if it will mess up my makeup? (This is more of an issue for face vs body). Also, I’m wondering if anyone has good recommendations for face sunscreen/sunscreen that won’t smell too much! Thanks everyone!

What about getting a foundation that has spf in it or using a bb cream instead of a full foundation??

Do not put it on after makeup! It will ruin it completely. Aveeno makes a good facial moisturizer with sunscreen. I wouldn't put straight sunscreen on the face, it will get too oily under your makeup. Also, some makeup already has spf in it. I also burn easily and I actually have never been burnt through my makeup lol so don't worry about it too much!

I would say apply body sunscreen right before you put your dress on, unless you cover your dress with something while you apply the sunscreen!

Put the makeup on top of it. There are foundations that have SPF in it as well, so talk to your makeup artist about that as a concern

Don’t put SPF on if you’re using flash photography!!!!! It’ll cause a horrible white cast on your face in the photos

Hi Elaine! My best advice to you would be to mix your SPF with some moisturizer an hour before getting your make up, as it will need time to sink into your skin. This is important as SPF can cause a terrible flashback in direct light that your photographer may or may not use. Also, make sure whatever foundation you use does not have SPF in it (once again it risks flashback in your photography). It will be more effective when it has sunken into the skin, and you’re correct, it’ll mess up your make up if you put it on top.

Make up will most likely have spf in it and will protect you. Sun screen never goes over makeup. You can out in under if you want

I would use a moisturizer like Aveeno or a bb cream with SPF under your makeup. Your HMUA may have recommendations for a foundation with SPF as well. Definitely not after makeup or it'll smear it all over!

Thank you everyone for your recommendations! I’ll definitely look into a moisturizer or BB cream that I can put on in advance of my makeup.

I would 100% talk to you’re makeup artist!! I’m sure she’s can help you come up with the best solution. I second everyone saying foundation with SPF, it’s the most predictable, and is made to protect your skin as well as keep you looking fantastic in the sun. i woild also talk to your photographer about your concerns, and see if there are options in the shade or not directly in the sun.

PLEASE talk to your photographer because if you use SPF and they’re using flash photography your photos will be ruined. Flashback is real.

I use this to put on my face/neck/shoulders during the day if I’m in the sun. I get the translucent one but it comes in different colors and it’s available at Sephora.

Thanks for the advice y’all! I’ll definitely steer away from pure sunscreen/SPF and look into different moisturizers and such.
