Sunset Ceremony Help

Amy & Justin, on March 5, 2022 at 5:07 PM Posted in Planning 0 3
Hi lovelies! We're getting married, most likely next April. We considered this October, but we're moving back across the country, buying a house, starting new jobs, and need a bit more time to prepare.
Question is, has anyone had a sunset ceremony with a reception after? How might we go about the timeline for serving dinner? The ceremony would be on the river and the reception would be in our backyard across the street. Sunset should be around 7:45PM on April 1.
Notes: No cocktail hour, one thank you speach and blessing, buffet dinner, then dancing. We are considering doing daytime photos/bridal portraits on a different day. Also we'll have less than 50 guests, one MOH and Bestman, Officiant is my FIL, and I want to do a 1st look with my dad. Thanks!

That's sounds like a beautiful time. If you're worried about having dinner too late, maybe you can serve some appetizers before the ceremony. I would definitely not delay dinner until after speeches and dances. Let's say your ceremony starts at 7:30, you can start the dinner line at 8, start speeches by 8:30, then cake and dancing until whenever.

This is what I was going to suggest! Maybe some snacks beforehand, but I think you're off to a great start. One thing you could think about is golden hour timing instead of absolutely at sunset? Our ceremony is going to be at 6:30 with a 7:36 sunset, and our reception is starting between 7 and 7:30!

For reference on lighting, if that's what's got you tied to the sunset (because I think moving it up an hour could be really great for your guests but it just a thought!) Our engagement pictures were taken at 8pm with an 8:46pm sunset and here's how the lighting turned out:

One of our last photos (8:55 maybe? So 10 minutes after sunset?)

After the actual sunset time is started getting pretty dark super fast. So I personally would move it up at least half an hour from actual sunset, but that's just me! I know that last one is black and white, but you can see the contrast from the shadows and everything.

If you already have a photographer, I'd chat with them too! You'll also want to remember that if it's cloudy, it will get dark well before sunset!

    Happy planning 💛💛💛
