Super-non Traditional Wedding Judgements

So FH and I’s wedding is largely untraditional. I mean no dances (for us at least, his mom wants a first dance really bad but we’re struggling to tell her no), no ceremony (private vows morning of), BYOB, we’re playing party games (for hole, cup pong, volleyball etc), basically just a giant party....

Really all I wanted was a non-formal party where I got to wear a wedding dress lol. However, we’re getting so many judgements saying we just shouldn’t even get married or that it’s a waste of time. Kinda hard to hear tbh. I’m SO excited for our wedding because we know it’s 100% what we want and not what we think we’re supposed to do. Sometimes it really does make me feel stupid while planning. But isn’t a wedding supposed to be whatever that means to you? The whole point is to celebrate two people who love each other regardless of what that looks like. Idk sometimes I just wanna elope and be done with it Smiley sad

I agree I think the issue is using traditional labels to describe something that isn’t remotely related to the traditions of the labels. If you want others to foot the bill, maybe have someone else host the celebration in your honor?

We definitely don’t want anyone to foot the bill. Honestly none of it matters anymore because we canceled the wedding lol.

This is true! Honestly posting it on here made me realize how firm I actually am in what I want. We cancelled the “wedding” anyways as of yesterday, so none of it matters anymore lol!

Yes, we’re doing a full-scale elopement instead with just us! That’s really what we wanted and this discussion actually helped the both of us come to that conclusion! Smiley smile

I'm sorry - I feel like you needed support and ended up with more critics. Do as you wish. I am having a relaxed wedding dinner. A small ceremony and dinner to follow. No other traditions will be had. I have gotten push back or questions and I just ignore it as best I can. I think your plan sounds fun. I tried to manage expectations at the beginning by explaining exactly what will go on and what wont go on at the wedding. People take weddings too seriously and it usually ends up feeling stiff and forced. I think yours sounds lovely. Cheers!

Its your wedding day and what you want it to be. I say do what you want and stop listening to other peoples opinions. On the flip slide remember this is your forever and you only get married once so make sure its everything you pictured and more because you don't want regret. I see a lot of people who had les then they wanted because of finances and then yeas later have the wedding they always dreamed of.
