Surprise proposal or expected?

I wasn't shocked, but I as still surprised when it happened.

I knew it was coming because we talked about it a lot and it was something we both knew we wanted.

I had an idea that he had bought a ring, and we had just bought a house together so I figured the proposal was coming.

I planned a trip for us to get out of town for a weekend to Savannah, GA since we had been so busy moving and getting the house together. I had a feeling it would happen then, and it did! Sort of knowing definitely didn't take away from how special it was.

We had talked about getting married, but when it came to the proposal, I was completely surprised. I had wondered if it was going to happen. The weekend before I was at a Halloween party with a close friend and she had a few drinks and was joking about calling my FH and asking him when he was going to "wife" me lol. But I was convinced that she couldn't keep a secret and that he would have had to have consulted some of my friends about things, that he wasn't going to do it. So, even until the moment when I closed my eyes for my "anniversary present" I was convinced he had gotten me a lego set (we both love legos). Imagine my surprise when I opened my eyes and he had a ring box instead! lol
Turns out that he picked the ring out all by himself and the only people who knew about his plan were his parents. They only found out after he came home from the jewelry store.

His proposal was expected. We had been living together for some time, and dating for an even longer period. When he shared that his mother had given him an ultimatum, I anticipated it would happen shortly thereafter. However it would have happened, I am just glad he chose me!

I knew it was coming. He had me pick my ring. We knew we would get married after he made a career change. 2 months after getting his dream job he bought my ring and officially proposed in front of my children.

We had picked out rings a year earlier they had been on layaway but then we had some financial problems and had to cancel the layaway. When he did propose I had no idea it was coming.

I was surprised!

I was pregnant with our daughter and on Christmas Eve he asked me to marry him sitting by the fireplace. I was speechless for a minute.

My finance made it obvious, telling not to plan things on a specific day cause he had plans for us, which never happens lol. I'm always the one making plans. The day he actually proposed tho, he did throw me off a little bit and I thought It wasn't gonna happen Haha but a ferry ride later and he asked 💍

Definitely surprised! We had spoke of marriage & he even asked what rings I liked & what size. But since he is horrible at keeping secrets I figured I would know, nope he kept the secret as we traveled to Italy & surprised me with the ring! I was so in shock & never even said yes until his mom asked! 😂

It was a little bit of both for me. I knew he was going to propose since I chose out the ring but I didn't know when he was going to propose. We were out at the park getting ready to leave after just setting up a picnic because it started to rain. He took this moment to stop me mid-way to the car to propose. It was really cute as he didn't plan for the rain, obviously, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Complete surprise!
We were lounging on a gorgeous deserted beach in Aruba and that wonderful man hid a ring all the way there. Propped up his phone when I wasn't looking (to get a video) and asked! I was speechless and dumbfounded! And that genius popped the question with the wedding band so I could pick out my own engagement ring. BEST DAY EVER.

Unexpected, we had talked about marriage and he was never into the idea (his parent have been divorced many times over and I think he's just slightly turned off by the idea) but 8 years into it (as soon as I was resolved we would never be married and I was okay with that) he proposed in Paris! Apparently he told everyone in our circles and I still had no idea.

My proposal was half expected/half surprise. I knew the engagement ring had come in, as I answered the door when the delivery man needed someone to sign for the package. I did not bring it up, even though we were both aware now that I knew... and a few months went by and, finally in September, when his birthday was rolling around I was thinking "holy cow, is he going to do it on his birthday?"

My parents took my whole family, to include my brother, his wife, my 4 nephews and 1 niece, out to dinner to celebrate FH's birthday (his family does not live in the State, so my parents have taken him in as their own) at a hibachi restaurant so it took a really long time... then we had an ice cream cake at my parents house and had to wait a while for it to thaw... nothing happened... and we got home around 10:30 at night. I felt pretty guilty thinking he might do it on his birthday and that I was expecting something big to happen for me on a day that should be celebrating him... but then, within 10 minutes of getting home, it happened!

So it went from expecting it... to "oh, guess not"... to "OH MY GOSH. THIS IS HAPPENING!"

He was very surprised when I proposed. He cried

Remember that not all proposals are from men proposing to women, so not everyone here was the proposee!

100% surprise! We've both been married before and he told me early on he had no intentions of ever getting married again. I was a little disappointed but didn't really care too much since my last marriage stunk lol. I had however always secretly hoped he'd change his mind and he'd propose after a karate belt test.

On Dec 2 2017 we had our test for our blue with black belt test in karate. He hurt his knee during the test and the sensei seemed to be rushing through it but I figured it was because FH was hurt and no one but our friend(he is a black belt in karate so he comes to all our tests) was there. The test was over and he and I were just standing there talking and he goes down on his knee and of course I'm all annoyed because he pushed himself too hard in the test...or so I thought. So I put my hands on my hips like come on get up so we can get home and showered. Next thing I know this box comes out with the most beautiful ring! He was SO nervous! His friend was in on it as well as the sensei so his friend snuck him the ring after the test and our sensei rushed the test because he was so excited lol. Our sensei had picked on us for months about how we should get married. He'd stopped for about 2 months...apparently FH had told him he was picking out rings and he was afraid I'd figure it out lol!

Anyways it was a surprise and exactly what I'd wanted even though I never told a single person that's how I'd wanted him to propose had he changed his mind on marriage.

Our sensei's fiance had my phone during the test to take pictures for me so she was able to capture the moment for me without me thinking twice about her having my phone

View Quoted Comment Yes, and like a previous poster I was dating the "I am never getting married guy." We were both 52 when we wed. It was round two for me!! I was shocked.....SHOCKED!!

We were in Paris but it was honestly a surprise bc we went as friends lol did a tour on the Eiffel Tower & what I thought was a picture ended up him being on one knee!

Half-expected, half-surprised. I picked the ring out so I knew it was coming, but I had no idea when!

His family is very conservative. They were not particularly pleased with us (read me) when we moved in together. I imagine they were expecting us to wed long ago and she finally just got tired of waiting for us to formalize our relationship.

Expected both times (long story) but second time was everything I pictured
