Surprising parents with engagement?! Needing ideas Asap!

Abby, on September 26, 2019 at 4:04 AM Posted in Parties and Events 0 5
Hello WeddingWire world!
Me and FH just recently got engaged. This is a big deal in both our families because back home it’s all about getting married the first year you know the person and we’ve waited and waited and have been together for 5 1/2 years now! Constantly getting asked when we’re getting married! We planned our engagement and the ring arrived and were headed on a flight back home in less than 48 hours.

Ive been thinking of just telling them we’re engaged, or just wearing the ring until they notice, but also I’d like to give them a really creative surprise for this moment! (To make up for the fact that my FH didn’t ask my parents for permission because I don’t agree with that way in my personal life) so my excuse and decision is I want to make it a surprise, and a fun one too! Does anyone have personal experience of surprising immediate family or friends that they could share? I’m open to all ideas! I need to be able to pull it off in 1 day though..the ideas I have found on google will either take too long, too expensive, or just not our style. But please share any ideas you have!
thank you for all your input!

I've always been a fan of the way people tell their parents that they're pregnant, like with a onesie that says "I love Grandpa" or something like that. I would do the same type of thing but with something wedding related, like maybe a sign that says "he put a ring on it" or "we're engaged" that you can put in a box and have them unwrap it. Then you could use the sign in engagement photos and get it framed for them!

When we decided to get engaged (ting came a bit after), the day after, we went to both parents houses and told them in person. I feel like Pinterest/social media makes people believe that everything needs to be done in some big, extravagant way. This is already big news to be excited about. I personally feel like there's no need to bring out the marching band. Just speak with them in person if you can, and they will appreciate you taking the time to talk with them individually.

FH “asked” my boys(18 and 15) before he asked me. Then we visited our parents at their houses and told them in person.

To go along with PP idea to do something similar to announcing a baby, you can get them mugs or tumblers that say “father/mother of bride/groom”

When we got engaged we just ran up to each of our parents and showed them my ring, of course none of them understood ahaha so we had to then explain that we were engaged, so if you find a cute way to do it, that'd be great!
