Suspended cake, help! Need ideas

Pinkuin, on May 28, 2014 at 10:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Hey guys!

So I am obsessed with a suspended cake display. Can you give me some ideas on how to hang this? My venue has wood beams going across the ceiling so I'd be hanging from that.

This is the cake, any suggestions on materials and technique would be greatly appreciated! Smiley smile

The beaded cable looks like a specialty item. If you can't find it, you can use chain and cover it with fabric.

You'll need to figure out what strength chain/bolts/etc you'll need given the combined weight of the cake, the board is it sitting on, and all the decorations surrounding it. Find yourself a local handy-man. Anyone with basic building skills should be able to put something together. And check with your venue on whether the beams are decorative or structural (basically, can you hang heavy things from them.)

Personally, I would look for a pedestal table with an attractive but narrow pedestal. Decorate around the edge. You'll be able to achieve a similar look without the construction/structure headache.

Wendy omg that is a horror story!!! do you know how they did it?

songbird I was thinking the chain and like a wodden platform would be the most secure way and then just decorate it. I might look into the narrow pedestal, thanks!

No, don't use chain. Any chain that looks nice is NOT sturdy enough to support the weight of the cake, etc. The only real quality product to use is aircraft cable, which means using a swageing tool. And you'll also need some turnbuckles or other things to adjust the lengths so the base will be level. Weave the chain through around the aircraft cable for decoration only. It's something that needs to be built on site. And the base needs to be wider than the cake so the chains, etc., don't cut into the sides of the cake. In other words, find a professional because the tools, etc. are not cheap.

FIRST you would have to confirm that your venue would even allow you to do this.

Hi, I'm not a professional baker, I just bake for fun, I did this suspended upside down cake just for a show and was really heavy , I think you must also ask the venue first because the cake can be really heavy and can cause damage, some beams are for decoration only, not part of the structure so be careful. Good luck

Thanks everyone! The beams are ok to hang things from the venue said, but I will double check bc i know how heavy cakes can get! Our engagement party cake was super heavy and it was tiny!

Len thanks for the tips!! those materials are definintely better than chain. do you think wood would be okay for the platform?

    Iran, that cake is amazing!!!

heres another pic of a simpler one..

I'd talk to the venue. You'll want to know what the structure of the venue is like and if the beams can support this kind fo weight.

Also you'll want to hire a professional to do the rig to hold the cake. If you try to make something yourself it will probably end badly. Look up vendors who do wedding decorations and see if there is someone who could do the suspended cake platform for you.

Some venues allow tulle or lights to be hung from beams. But something this heavy would require much larger bolts to be put into the beams. Make sure your venue knows WHAT you want to hang.

That is cool but I'd be scared of it falling, as others mentioned. Maybe you can just hang other decorations around the cake and not the cake itself?

Just seeing those suspended cakes give me anxiety! I can see someone knocking it with their hip and the cake just swinging away! Yikes!

I think I would have a heart attack seeing my cake suspended in air like that. On the other hand it is a gorgeous display!

Either hire a pro or just forgo the idea. This seems really unnecessary and potentially disastrous.

    Definitely hire a pro.

For example, my fiance looooves the cake that Kaley Cuoco had in her wedding this past December so my wedding planner had to find a baker with the talent and who would be willing to do a smaller version of it. We decided that we are going to hang it from a chandelier inside our draped canopy over our sweetheart table so the baker is going to work with the company we are renting the canopy from to see the best and most sturdy way to hang the cake from the beams. She has a process she says she goes through for these types of cakes. She made a suspended cake for the wife of one of the Thunder NBA bball players this past year --- it did not fall and was beautiful!

Just make sure whoever you go with has plenty of experience in these types of cakes and will give you a detailed run through of how they make sure it won't fall/what kind of materials they use etc. Because yes it could be very diasterous if not done correctly. Good luck and yay for being date twins!

Oh and update, the venue allows hanging but not bolting anything TO the actual beams. So im assuming it would have to be a draping over the beam type of hanging. They are going to ask the engineering dpt. This is starting to feel unsecessary and not worth the pain lol. Thanks WW!
