Sweating for wedding, broken foot edition

Danielle, on July 9, 2017 at 12:51 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 10

So, some of you might remember that I'm a runner and am training for the NYC marathon. Or, at least I was. Two days ago during my morning run, I tripped, landing on my right hand, right knee, and my left ankle, which decided to turn outward and get broken, as well as drag two other bones out of place with it. I'm going to need surgery and will be in a cast/on crutches for my bachelorette at the end of the month. (I've gotten over that). I can defer my marathon entry a year, though I can't push back my first fitting, which will be just after I'll be back on my feet. Any tips for keeping fit while off my feet are welcome.

I would do as much core work-outs as you can (rowing crunches, etc.) that don't require being on your feet to maintain as close as you can get to the amount of cardio you're used to getting...

Hi @Kate! Yes, the orthopedist said I should be fine to stand and dance by my early December wedding, though a 26.2-mile race in early November is off the table, with the intense training and my foot will be like a piece of china, etc.

I had knee surgery earlier this year - I just googled non weight-bearing leg exercises and found a decent amount. I'd recommend getting small workout bands (super cheap on Amazon) that you can use for resistant for leg raises, hip clams, etc. The only thing I could find to do for upper body while off my feet was seated shoulder presses.

Oh no! That's terrible. I'm sorry that happened to you!

You can focus on upper body for now, but you'll really need to keep the diet in check. You could try some non-weight bearing cardio like a recumbent bike.

    SO SORRY!

Runner here- I couldn't run for 6-weeks pre wedding. So I was careful about what I ate - the #1 advice. I did a lot of yoga, pilates and upper body. However, I could use the elliptical.

Last year (though) I needed to have peroneal tendon repair, 3-4 month NO WEIGH BEARING! For that- They modified my bike so I could use it as an arm bike for cardio (so I could do it when I wanted to), work on core and upper body. I gained about 5 lbs but nothing to noticeable. Also, I got a knee scooter and went to the gym to do pilates- the instructor modified the workouts.

Thanks for the tips everyone! These are all great points, especially re: the core-building exercises and dietary concerns. Also, @Z_Runner, I'm seriously considering a knee scooter, not just for exercise but because it would be easier to use around NYC than crutches.

To add insult to literal injury, I was just watching track on TV. Smiley smile

Knee scooters can be great, but can also be dangerous. I had a coworker using one and she wasn't paying attention, and scooting along and tipped over and broke her hip.

I know crutches aren't the easiest or safest either, just don't let the 4 wheels and semi-sturdy feelings trick you into false security.

And good luck hearing well, and healing quickly!

@Danielle- the knee scooter save my life! I work in Boston in a research lab- crutches where a nightmare! I kept falling while trying to do my work. And TMI- you will get a nice work out on the glutes! At least on the side you are pushing Smiley winking

Good luck and keep us posted!

PS- I did NY in 2010, and for a city I thought it's a hard marathon. Doing Philly this November. I was supposed to do BigSur but a flare injury and wedding planning I couldn't train. So- silver lining: you will have extra time for the wedding.
