Table Mirrors-Are they tacky?

Crystal, on January 15, 2014 at 8:16 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 19

Hey all. My mom really wants to get me mirrors for our tables. Do you all think they are tacky or just personal preference? Also she wants to get small heart mirrors rather than large round ones for our votives (4 per table) Are small mirrors more/less elegant for centerpieces? Feedback please =)

I can't stand them. But that's just me. It's a matter of style/preference...although, I'm not sure what I'm going to use. I wanted to use a wood slice, but now I'm thinking that will be overdone by the time my wedding rolls around....

Circle mirrors are not tacky..but the heart shaped mirror might be.

I think if they are done tastefully and not overdone it can look very nice. I just think it looks a little cheap depending on what you put on them. I'd really only do small ones for tea lights or a grand statement one like below.

I am using them! but i am using large mirrors because i need my centerpiece to fit on it. i'm an optical engineer and i really wanted to incorporate that into my reception. that is one of the ways. i'm not sure larger or smaller is more elegant, it's a matter of what works best on your table. small heart mirrors under a few votives would probably look very nice

I don't see how mirrors would be "tacky" to be honest, even heart shaped ones. I think too often people confuse the terms "tacky" and "unfashionable" on these boards. Tacky would be along the lines of breaking etiquette, unfashionable would be something that was done commonly previously, but is no longer considered "fashionable" and thus not used as often.

If it's what you want to do, and you don't care that it's not the "hot" thing right now, then go for it!

OMG. This is kind of unrelated, but I went to a wedding years ago where there were circular mirrors over every table. Our whole table pretended to be synchronized swimming. It was hilarious, and consequently, one of the most memorable weddings I've ever attended. Sorry, couldn't resist...

I've seen them done nicely where they've been part of what the venue has set up along with candles, like a golf club or banquet hall, and I've also seen them over done where I've thought they looked tacky of cheap because of too much going on. These were DIY events, some fundraiser dinners and a few weddings. I think if you're going to have them that simplicity is key.

I like them. I don't really care if they're overused or not, my centerpieces will be similar to the first pic that BoxingBride posted. I think they are pretty and help to magnify a smaller centerpiece without being overwhelming.

This is going to prob sound strange, but table mirrors always make me think of coke. I think Kelly started doing coke with Colin off a mirror on 90210. I also think her mom Jackie also snorted cocaine off a mirror in the first season. I was an adolescent and thought it was so scandalous! So while I think they are pretty, they trigger strange 90210 memories for me.

PS I love hearts, but a heart mirror might be a bit much.

    :-)

    tack·y

    2 [tak-ee] Show IPA

    adjective, tack·i·er, tack·i·est.

    1.not tasteful or fashionable; dowdy.

2.shabby in appearance; shoddy: a tacky, jerry-built housing development.

    3.crass; cheaply vulgar; tasteless; crude.

    4.gaudy; flashy; showy

I do realize though many people hate the word "tacky".

ETA: ugh I hate myself for busting out the dictionary lol.

I do not like heart shaped...and I think most look like they need something to soften the edges to them. I like the runner style one in the photo...but the others seem like they need a framing of some sort? Maybe hot glue some beading around the edges, to take that sharpness off? Other than that...they are a great way of illuminating candles, even more so...and making the table look busier and less sparse.

Mirrors are not at all tacky, when used properly they can add a level of elegance. I personally love when mirrors are incorporated into a centerpiece as it gives that little extra that makes it stand out. Although I do believe too many people have repeated the same centerpiece with mirrors/candles which is what makes people question using them.

If you do include mirrors stick to square or round, avoid the heart shaped ones.

I saw recently, mirrors that were more 3D than 2D...sort of like a box, with the edges mirrored and beveled, too! Or just glue little glass beads to the bottoms of them, to make "feet" and they look even cuter. It gives candles that "infinity candle" look!

    I don't think they're "tacky"... just typical.
