Tablecloths: buy or rent?

starsinwaves, on February 23, 2018 at 1:00 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 9
Hi everyone. Our event company quoted us $17 each to rent basic colored tablecloths, and I know we can buy them from an online company much cheaper, then sell them after the wedding. Is there a catch here? Will we have to get them pressed if we buy them? At the end of the day, it’ll be a difference of $50-75 between buying and renting (not including potential resale) so I don’t want to risk something going wrong with buying over such a small amount. But I’d of course love to save the money if we can.

Also if anyone can recommend a company to buy from, that would be really helpful too. Thanks!

If you buy them yourself you will definitely have to get them pressed, as they'll come folded in boxes. So that's a ton of work to do yourself, or an extra expense to take them somewhere to be pressed. Plus if you do them yourself, then you'll have to find a place to store them flat and figure out how to transport them to the venue so they don't get creased again. I'm team #ThrowMoneyAtIt, I would not want to deal with all that.

ETA and if you want to sell them after, you'd also have to have them cleaned, which is another expense, and enough to cancel out any savings you had from buying vs. renting. You certainly wouldn't be able to resell them for more than you paid. No one would pay full price to buy used linens.

I'm planning on buying mine from linentablecloths.com

I think the only downside I can see it that you will be responsable for washing/ironing/transporting your own linens before, and remembering to take them with you after.

For me I determined the savings were worth it, but you may not want that extra stress.

We got ours from Amazon. We figured that the cost we are saving we can just handle pressing them.

I plan on renting. The cost of purchasing them through linentablecloth.com is super cheap, but I just don't want to deal with trying to re-sell them later, so I'll save a little $ at the cost of having to box them up and mail them back. Seems like a good deal to me.

$75 is not worth the hassle! And I don’t see too many people in FB groups and the like buying used table cloths. It would also be my area which is all about rentals.

First you have to purchase them, press them, transport them, and if you haven't hired a DOC then you will have to set up all the tables. Then they will need to be removed form the tables, transported home, cleaned, and then they will sit there until someone decides to purchase them. Most of the time you will only receive approximately 50% of what you originally paid for resale. Personally there are numerous other things to do the week of the wedding, besides worrying about tablecloths. I would pay the money and not worry about pressing, transporting, setting up, removing and transporting dirty table cloths back home, washing, drying and reselling. It is all up to you if you want to add all the steps to your weekly plan

People can make buying linens sound awfully onerous. Some people don't have the option to just throw money at it. $75 can be a lot to some.
Yes, you have to press them before use, but it's really not that big a deal. Throw them in the dryer with a damp bath towel and they need very little ironing.
Hang them loosely folded over a hanger covered with a section of pool noodle to reduce creases.
After the wedding, you can go as far as just giving them away and still pay way less than renting. You don't have to worry about selling them at all.
As a compromise, www.linentablecloth.com now has a rental program. You pay half the cost of their retail prices and free shipping over $149.
