Taco Truck for 200?

Brooke, on April 24, 2021 at 11:47 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14
Hi! My fiancé and I are planning a 200 person wedding, but we also want it to be more casual and just a large party. We are planning to do a food truck for our reception. We hired a taco truck for catering and they seem sure that they can serve the 200 guests with no problems within 2 hours. It would be only 2 menu options but the tortillas would be heated as they are ordered. We are concerned that this will take to long to serve all our guests and don’t want everyone to wait in line. Does anyone have experience using a food truck for a large wedding? Should we have multiple? Any advice from those who have used food trucks for their wedding?

Honestly, this sounds like a bad idea. I’m sure the taco truck handles a huge amount of people during lunch rushes, but that’s very different than a hosted event.
Will they be standing in line? Or will wait staff bring them to the tables? Will there be food for people to snack on during those two hours?
The IDEA of a taco truck sounds really fun, but 200 hungry people at a wedding sounds like a lot.

Food trucks are a very trendy idea for weddings right now, but with that many guests, one truck is not nearly enough! You probably need a minimum of 3-4 trucks to get everyone fed in a timely manner. Think about your guests at the end of that 2-hour window who have to sit around and wait while they watch everyone else being fed. Plus, if this truck says they can feed 200 people in 2 hours, that's only 36 seconds per person...that kind of doesn't sound realistic?

There have been several posts on this and the general consensus is that food trucks are not a great idea especially with a crowd your size. You're saying they can all be served within 2 hours?? That's a very long wait for those on the tail end and then what are those who are first served going to do for those 2 hours until everyone is finished? My place of employment had a taco truck once for staff appreciation for 40 employees and it took a long time for everyone to be served. It was not a good experience.

While it is a good thought, it will not work out well. There are taco companies that cater that have giant grills and easily serve several people at a time. A food truck cannot do that. Even the seasoned food trucks that serve year after year at festivals can only serve one person at a time with long lines that are very slow to move, and are not designed for events such as weddings where guests need to be served simultaneously. Guests should be served under 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with others. While I LOVE food trucks, they aren't super fast. Serving 200 people with 1 food truck is going to be really rough. Even just think about when you're at a food truck during a regular work day and how long the wait can be with a line of like 20 people. It's not just that feasible.

Food trucks are great when there’s a bunch at a fair or when your guest list is super small, but taking two hours to serve 200 people tacos is not really going to work, even if you’re looking for a casual vibe. Imagine being at the end of that two-hour line. For comparison, we had a three course meal and 130 guests and all three courses were served and completed in under two hours.

Food trucks are very trendy for weddings right now, but they are typically used at the end of the night after dinner as a late night snack. That’s because they are not equipped to handle the volume of guests at a wedding all at once. Having them as a late night snack allows guests to get food at their leisure as they get hungry. If you have 1 food truck for 200 people, it is going to be chaos (and extremely inconvenient for your guests). There are going to be massive lines and wait times. Guests that get their tacos first are going to be sitting around waiting for an hour while others eat. And only two options doesn’t sound great either. I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but a taco or 2 isn’t going to be an ideal “meal” for me. It just doesn’t sound like the most gracious of hosting options. If you are dead set on doing food trucks as the meal option, I would definitely get several more, preferably each offering a different type of food. For 200 people I would get at least 4 food trucks.

2 hours to serve all guests?? That is simply not acceptable. It's annoying enough to wait to get released to a buffet table

I think the general rule is one food truck per 50 guests, or else guests will be waiting forever to get their food. So you'd need 4 taco trucks...at that rate, you're probably better off doing a traditional sit down meal or buffet.

I hate to say I have to agree with everyone here. I have been to a wedding with a taco truck and a much smaller guest list. And the food took forever. We were so hungry. Unless they can find a different way to do it that I'm not thinking of, I'd say go with another option. There was a big line for the food truck when it was time to eat and then we had to sit around forever while it was made. If you love their food can they do more of a catering thing and forego the truck? We used to have a taco place cater some our work events.

One food truck would only reasonably serve 30-45 people in half an hour. That's even too long to make people wait at your reception where you're hosting your guests. 200 people would have people at the end of the line making a trip to a local restaurant for dinner. I would suggest thinking of something else.

I’m a June 2022 bride as well and we are also doing a taco truck!! My best friend also did a taco truck for 250-300 guest and it worked out fine no one was waiting two hours in line to be served. I believe it all depends on what’s on the menu and if it’s made to order. Please let me know what you decide to do and good luck!!

In lieu of time travel, I can't imagine how one taco truck served 300 guests inside of two hours. If every guest took even one minute at the front that would be at least 4 hours. 300 guests x 1 minutes each is 300 minutes for the last person in line. There are 60 minutes per hour therefore it would be 4 1/2 + hours roughly for the person at the end of the line. Im being generous at the one minute estimation, it would probably be longer.

Please keep in mind not all guest arrived at the same time and the truck was present for a good 3-4 hours to serve people as they came. I’m not saying there wasn’t a line (it’s a food truck, not a catering business) but people were not waiting in a huge line for hours. I would agree that hiring a second truck would make sense however 1 truck in this case worked. I’m not too worried about it as it seemed to workout just fine. ☺️
