Taking out Under Layers of a Ballgown?

alexisdemetra, on August 13, 2018 at 1:30 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hi y'all!

Looking to see if anyone has experience with taking out some layers of tulle under your ballgown. I absolutely LOVE my dress and the shape, but it is very large on the bottom. So much so that if I tried to slow dance or hug someone I'm standing pretty far away from them. Has anyone done this? Any recommendations?

My seamstress took out the layer of crinoline, not the tulle and it significantly brought down the fluff. is that an option?

Not sure if having a front picture will help. This was when I tried it on in the store-- so I'm on the pedestal.

Yes I believe so! There's probably around 10 layers of things under there. A few layers of full tulle and then one bigger piece (I think this may be crinoline) that is satin until about the knees and then lots of condensed layers of tulle from the knees down.

Do you have a slip on? If you do maybe no slip?

No slip! It's pretty heavy (fall wedding!) and has about 10 layers underneath already. Trying to see if taking a few out will just get it a bit closer to my body but maintain the ball gown shape. Even if it's closer to an A-Line that's ok. Just don't want people to be stepping on it or not able to get close to me.

Yiu can take it out. But If you take it all or most of it out it will def change the shape of your dress, which you said you liked. Have you tried streaming it to soften it up a bit? Most tulle can be kind of stiff but soften with steaming.

I have not done that! I'll definitely do that first. Thank you for the tip!

I think the proportions are beautiful the way it is. I'd be concerned that if you take too much out, it's going to look kind of heavy & droopy. I don't think it's that big. I agree steaming might soften the underlayers a bit.

Talk to a reputable seamstress. They will know what can be removed without sacrificing the integrity of the dress!

I had some tulle taken out but he only cut one layer in the front. He said if he cut the back that it wouldn’t hold the train the right way.

Thank you all so much! I am definitely going to a professional who alters wedding dresses full-time. But these tips help a ton so I can figure it out before I go!
