Taking your Future Husband's last name or Hyphenating?

Ty, on November 17, 2020 at 4:37 PM Posted in Married Life 0 76

Have any of you decided if you are taking your FH last name in full or hyphenating? What was the deciding factor?

The deciding factor was after living, studying and volunteering abroad; i found that over two thirds of the world, women do not change their name after marriage. Even in places like Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran, places where we Anericans are taught that the women are very oppressed, even there the women does not take her husband's name. I found that the American custom of changing names after marriage was outdated and actually orginated from womem being PROPERTY of their husbands.

With hyphenated last names, sometimes you run into issues with things like feeling prescription insurance, and people writing down your name properly etc. Sometimes it’s easier to just take his last name. I cannot wait to take his last name!

I took my wife’s last name. It was important to us to share a family name, especially as a same sex couple. I had a very very common last name and no attachments to it due to no relationship with my father, so it only made sense.

Sweet, my struggle is that I am so close with my family (specifically my father) and don't want him to feel offended by dropping the family name.

I have seen it so frequently that people have hyphenated.

I will be having two names. Making my maiden name my second middle name and adding his last name. Lol I will have 4 names essentially but i did not want to give up my middle name nor my last name. And sometimes people have issues with hyphenating

Hi Ally, I 100 percrnt agree with you. I've received so many negative feedback about it. I wish more American women were not pulled in by our society's pressure. Its fine to decide any decision but one must do it because they know it's best for them rather than doing something because of society's expectations.

I have seen this as an option as well. 4 names is alot, but I completely understand not wanting to give your names.

This is cool, but in my area, errors with insurances, school enrollment, etc would definitely happen.

I’ve heard that there may be some issues. My fiancé has two middle names and sometimes one middle name is left off. Lol I’ve seen some friends of mine had some trouble since their names are hyphenated

I have as well and it’s usually within American society. I guess I don’t understand the logic. But to each their own!
